I’m guessing all of you have played the game “would you rather” before. Although that game can be fun, I feel as if most people cannot give an honest, and thorough explanation to their answer. Now that you have time to think and explain your reasoning, would you rather only live by the ocean, or the mountains the rest of your life?
I get asked this question a lot, and I have never actually broken it down and thought about my honest opinion. Personally, I would have to choose to live by the mountains. Living in an area like we do currently, provides so many opportunities. Although we may not be around water 24/7, we still have access to lakes, rivers, etc., as well as the mountains. When you live by the ocean, it limits the options. The ocean provides people with the ability to learn how to surf, fishing, and snorkeling, but not much else. With mountains brings, hunting, fishing, skiing, hiking, berry picking, hot springs, and so much more. I am grateful for all the experiences that mountains bring, which is why I chose mountains for my answer, and I will vacation to the ocean.

As most of you know, our town, Salmon Idaho, does not have many options for recycling. I believe the only public recycling available to the town is the Salmon Millcreek LLC building that recycles cans. Many claim that this is not enough recycling in our community and we need more resources to collect, recycle, and reuse waste. There may be a few reasons as to why we do not have recycling such as; lack of population, distance from established towns, and limited funding. Most likely if any options for recycling are produced, they will be owned privately or be volunteer driven. What are your thoughts about the limited possibilities for recycling in our community? Are there any suggestions for a plan of action to get more recycling?
There is limited funding in our town in general, so it is unlikely that our town will pour money into a project that would recycle trash or compost when they have other priorities in mind. This is saddening to me on an environmental level, because even if we are a small town that produces less waste than larger cities such as New York, New York or LA, I believe that any recycling, however small or large, is beneficial. However, if our town can not offer the opportunity to convert and reuse waste, we should look towards other options. Such as, encouraging community members to recycle by composting and reusing trash on their own accord. It may not be as efficient as a recycling facility, but it is better than letting our waste pile up. Have you ever been asked the question, “If you were stranded on an island would you rather have ‘this’ or ‘that’?” It’s a very popular question that comes with many variables ranging from food items to people, and it can be hard to choose. Whenever I have been asked this question it always is funny to me when I’m asked to choose between food items. One time in an English class I was asked “If you were stranded on an island would you rather only have sandwiches or pasta for every meal you had to eat?” This one was funny to me because of all the arguments students made to support their decisions. Now if I asked you that same question what would your answer be?
I would choose sandwiches because I feel as though the definition of a sandwich could be very broad. Firstly, there are many different types of sandwiches, hot or cold, ham and cheese or peanut butter and jelly, there are many variations. Also, I would define a sandwich as item A stuffed in between two layers of item B, so therefore tacos and many other yummy things would be considered sandwiches. As we are approaching our high school graduation, I'm sure we have all had someone ask this question, "What are you doing after high school?" Now when I first started getting asking this question, I would give exact details of what I wanted to do. That only lasted about the first ten people. I realized that most people don't really care about the small things, just if it's a big school or how much money the profession of my choice would bring me. That's what most of society wants with its newcomers, for them to become doctors and lawyers. But there is the other side that says to do things that'll make one happy. Doing their passion all their life is more fulfilling and it won't matter how much money it makes. One does not need to go to college to make anything out of life. So that is the question, is happiness more important than success?
When it comes down to this thought, I would say happiness is more important than success. However, that is a scary statement to say. I know that for myself when I head off to college, I want to go into theatre studies. That is a profession that isn't very well making in income and not everyone would recommend, but I love it. While it'll probably be my minor and I'm looking at other options for a degree, performing is something that is worth spending the money on to me. Everyone has to make some sort of income to survive in our society, and I believe that while one is making that money, they should be happy while doing it. Looking around school I notice that our peers have all but stopped reading compared to the generations before us. Seeing everyone on their phone's looking for the next five second clip to make them happy saddens me. Do you think the introduction of mobile phones and the internet has stopped kids from reading as much?
I absolutely think that my peers have stopped reading as much. Back in elementary and middle school other kids read just as much as me, it helped me feel challenged. Now with us being seniors in high school I see no one (minus the select few) actually reading anything besides their friend's Instagram post. It's not even kids who have stopped reading with reports saying that 50% haven't read a full book in a year. This is a dilemma that is affecting everyone but not enough people care to try and put the phone down for the day. We hear people talking about their “spirit animal” quite often, and how they relate to certain animals, but why is that? It can be comforting for some people. Animals have their own personalities just like humans do, so what animal do you have similar characteristics with, and how?
Since I was a very young baby everyone in my family has always called me a monkey. When I was nine months old I grew to love climbing out of my crib constantly everyday, and I even climbed on top of the fridge around the same age. Not only this, but I did gymnastics and I was always hanging on things and doing crazy flips like monkeys do. Since it was neverending for me to be doing some sort of monkey move, that nickname has always kind of stuck with me throughout my childhood. I have a lot of similar characteristics to monkeys, but I would say my personality is most like a monkey because of how I was always flying around like one.
Looking into our world today, almost everything is technology based. Communication, learning, or even showing people who we are. Technology is taking over and who knows what the future will bring. Do you like how much technology is present in our world today?
I personally dislike the role technology, phones specifically, plays in our society. If everyone didn’t rely on phones to communicate I would choose to not have one. Phones have made me worry too much about my self image, worry about what’s being posted, and make it hard to communicate in person. I don’t like how it’s “scarier” to talk to somebody in person and it’s easier to just send a text instead. I would rather have somebody tell me a cool story instead of reading it on Facebook. I think technology has its benefits and can be super helpful in some situations. But I think it plays too big of a part in the way our society functions. Greetings, and welcome to Pacebook! I want to begin our blogging experience by continuing to get to know one another a little bit better. As you have likely noticed, I am drawing on Dr. Who quite a bit for its connection to literature (the ability of books to transport you through time and space, like a TARDIS, for you Whovians). However, the same is probably equally true for all art, especially music. As a musician, I am naturally drawn to the parallels between music and literature, which was actually the focal part of my Master's Thesis (reading the "jazz novel" as a model for more egalitarian communication in a post-national world). Music also seems to have special ties to memory, though, in a way that transcends language, and a simple few bars from a song can trigger very specific memories. So, I want you to think of a song that serves as a TARDIS for you and transports you to another time and place. One song (of many) that functions as a TARDIS for me is "One Tin Soldier" by The Original Castle (and more famously performed by Coven). More accurately, however, it was performed by my dad, and I didn't actually hear the original until years later. It is a protest song that talks about greed and how it corrupts people and is the root cause behind many (if not all) wars. More than that, though, the song tells a story which is delivered quite skillfully and with ample amounts of development and irony. Actually, the song has many parallels to "The Pardoner's Tale" from Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, which we will be looking at later in the year, but of course I didn't know that at the time; I simply enjoyed the melody, the moral, and the complexities of the song. It is the first "favorite song" I remember having, and the first song I recall attempting to write was a very close imitation of "One Tin Soldier." Hearing it now takes me back to sitting at my father's feet in our old house when I was four or five years old, although I don't think the studio version is as good (the flute part is a little cheesy, really). While it's not a song I listen to very often, it does evoke many memories when I do, and it has certainly had a profound influence on me, both as a person and as a lover of stories. If you've never heard it, here is the original by The Original Castle: Now, I want to hear from you. What is a song that takes you back to another time and place? Explain in detail, and include a link to YouTube, so we can all listen to it as well, please. I look forward to hearing your stories!
