Growing up I had always hoped to learn another language, yet it never happened because I did not have the time nor opportunities to do so. However, this would have been a much easier quest for me if it was offered during school. As we all know we need at least one language credit during high school to pass. In our high school this credit can even come from band or choir–which in my opinion should not be considered a language credit. There is only so much one can learn from one semester of spanish (or otherwise). Although this is not a large problem within schools, would it be beneficial and sustainable to require students to take a language class from kindergarten through high school? If so, what language would be the best, or should there be multiple options?
I believe that it would be a good opportunity for schools to require kids to learn a second language, because it broadens incoming adults to have more opportunities when it comes to communicating and interacting with diverse groups of people with new perspectives. A reference for the sustainability of this idea is how Canada teaches students in elementary school both English and French, and this has been their standard for a while now. I think every school would simply need one or two more teachers to make this proposal function, and it would go a long way for students' futures and increase the quality of public education. It could be more challenging to offer more than one language, so that each kid could choose what they desire, because there would have to be more teachers to do so. I think that the best language for this would be Spanish, as it is one of the largest languages.

When the new year starts you see people all over posting about their goals for the new year, something they’re leaving in the past, or coming up with a word to live by. I’ve never been one for New Year’s resolutions, but this year one kind of struck me. When it comes to thinking of the year ahead, we’re about to graduate, move out, head to college, or just head to a new place. It’s definitely intimidating, scary, and exciting, but we’re all going to be entering adulthood together.
As this time approaches, I’ve told myself that my goal is to trust my path. Trust that what happens after graduation is what is meant to happen in my life and see where it takes me. To trust that good things are coming ahead no matter how scary it may seem. This is big for me, as I doubt things often, but I hope that this goal helps to take the stress off of life ahead. As well as achieve this goal of trusting my path ahead, I hope to achieve success, no matter how small. My question for you is, do you have any goals for the future? Whether you’re a planner or not, what do you want to accomplish? The internet was created for many purposes. One of the greatest uses for the internet is being able to keep in contact with friends, family and even people from the other side of the country that a person wouldn't have met without the internet. However, one of the biggest problems facing the youth today on the internet is their safety.
Some of these kids know more things about the internet than their own parents. They can navigate all sorts of things through the games they play. They aren't afraid to talk to anyone and give them all types of information because they don't have the capacity to understand what the other person behind the screen intentions are. The saddening thing is now these young children are targets for everything; sex trafficking, information, scamming. And one won't think it'll happen to me or a family member, but it does. My seven year old brother was playing on the family computer when I walked in on him and he was having a very explicit conversation with another player. Now, him being young and not being able to read or type that well, he didn't understand the full context of the conversation but he had to have a talk with my parents about the dangers of playing on the computer. Because of this happening to me and affecting my family, I wanted it to be the topic for this week and wanted to get your guys' perspective on the topic. What do you all think about the dangers of the internet? Is being able to talk to strangers behind a screen risky or no risk at all? In our school I've seen so many middle schoolers walking around with cans apon cans of redbull and related drinks. Some of these kids can't go hours without the insane amount of caffeine they're drinking. The question I'm asking is: Should there be an age limit for the consumption of energy drinks.
Personally I think there should be am age limit. Caffeine in large amounts are dangerous to humans, leading to faster heartbeats which eventually cause heartattacks. The FDA recommends no more than 400mg of Caffeine for an adult man. And a can of Redbull has around 200, and some of these middle school kids are drinking 2-3 cans in a span of the class time. These kids are literally killing themselves and I think there should be an age limit for energy drinks, maybe 17-18 or make it 21 like with alcohol. Caffeine is a killer. In today’s world there is a wide variety of fast food options. Although I am grateful for all of the dining out options that are available, I feel like it has been a major factor in the country’s obesity rise. Does your family dine in or dine out more often, and which do you rather?
As we all know, the United States is known for having higher percentages of overweight people. There are many different factors that contribute to this, but I believe the invention of fast food and being able to eat out whenever it works best has played a major role in this. My family does not eat out very often, unless we are out of town obviously. I know some families that eat the majority of their meals at restaurants, or they order food to go from different places. The convenience of this is beneficial, but it does not create healthy habits. Personally, I enjoy a homemade meal significantly more than a meal that is bought because it is adjusted to my family’s preferences. However, going out to eat is sometimes nice and has its benefits, such as; not having to clean the kitchen, and being able to try new things. I think that people would be more willing to make their own meals if we did more research on how it can help us make healthier food choices. The time of year has come that snow is about to start to fall. To some this is a positive experience, because it signals the beginning of the skiing, sledding, and hot chocolate season. Yet, to others this time of the year brings on a depression, because they are not able to go outside and enjoy the warmth. Moreover, winter often goes hand in hand with Christmas, whether one enjoys christmas or not can determine if they appreciate winter. Does the snowy season fill your heart, or bring you into hibernation?
Personally, I love the winter because it means that ski season is coming, and it is time to start preparing for sledding parties. Moreover, I love to be able to cuddle up in a blanket next to a warm fire, with a cup of hot coco in hand, watching the snow fall. This time of year always fills me with joy. I feel motivated to wake up in the morning when I know that it has just snowed all night. The only downfalls to winter is the feeling of being too cold, or the difficulties of driving on snowy roads. In my opinion the positives outway the negatives, because the winter will always be a nostalgic season for me, in which I get to spend the most time with family during the holiday season. I know it’s not common for us to want to be at school. At least to learn anyways. We get to socialize, participate in extracurriculars, and interact with people we don’t normally do. But, we’re also at school to learn new things and develop new learning abilities. All of us are academically skilled in our own ways and reflect that in our classes, even if they’re not our favorites. But I feel like everyone at least has one class that makes their day better. My question is what is your favorite class you’re currently taking at school? Either because of the curriculum, or because of the people in it.
For me, I really enjoy my speech class. It is a full classroom with 27 kids which made me very nervous at first but it’s a good group. I enjoy speech because I need to develop good public speaking skills for my future career, but also because I love being able to write every week. My classmates make the class fun with humorous speeches, and fun jokes which makes speaking in front of them once a week a lot less stressful. I also enjoy the work. Learning all the different aspects of communicating and developing that into powerful speeches is a good thing to know, and I wish I would’ve know these topics before speaking at all of my senior project events. Although the work load is heavy, I enjoy knowing that these skills will be transferred into my future career and will be used in my future. Just as soon as the fall was upon us, it left just as quickly. Throughout the fall season people look forward to the night of Halloween to dress up and get treats. There's also a lot of other things about fall that make it so loveable. For example, pumpkin spiced things, scary movies, flannels and the falling of leaves. But as soon as the clocks turned to midnight on October 31 and it became November 1, there was a change in mood. Stores have completely changed the look of everything to fit the Christmas season. People are starting to play Christmas music and food chains are bringing out the peppermint flavoring. My question is, is it too early? As there is still technically a couple weeks of fall and Thanksgiving is approaching.
I personally have already started to play Christmas music in my car or when I'm doing things around the house. I love Christmas music but I won't start decorating until after Thanksgiving. For me it's not officially the winter or holiday season until there is snow on the ground and the lights are up. Especially with us living in Salmon where winter can last for half the year, I'm not quite ready for that. Where Christmas and the holidays bring a lot of joy and happiness for a few months, it can also bring stress. So I say that we can move into it slowly and not rush because that's what makes it longer and more enjoyable. As Idahoans, we've all eaten our fair share of potatoes throughout our lives. It's all we're known for. Idaho potatoes are staples, and yet they come in so many different styles. You got boiled and baked, mashed, scalloped and even more than that. Potatoes are a comfort food and how one enjoys their potatoes can show what they're like. So I'm asking, what's your favorite style of potato and why?
For me, I believe the best potato style is hashbrowns. A lovely golden plate of crispy hashbrowns is the best way to open up a day. Plus, if you smother them in sausage gravy, it's sure to taste even better. I like hashbrowns because of my grandmother, whenever we stayed over at her house she always fixed us up a great heaping of hashbrowns. And whenever she tried to make latkes (Jewish potato pancakes) there would always be leftover potatoes to make hashbrowns for the next mornings' breakfast. It's both taste and nostalgia that gets me coming back. I’m guessing all of you have played the game “would you rather” before. Although that game can be fun, I feel as if most people cannot give an honest, and thorough explanation to their answer. Now that you have time to think and explain your reasoning, would you rather only live by the ocean, or the mountains the rest of your life?
I get asked this question a lot, and I have never actually broken it down and thought about my honest opinion. Personally, I would have to choose to live by the mountains. Living in an area like we do currently, provides so many opportunities. Although we may not be around water 24/7, we still have access to lakes, rivers, etc., as well as the mountains. When you live by the ocean, it limits the options. The ocean provides people with the ability to learn how to surf, fishing, and snorkeling, but not much else. With mountains brings, hunting, fishing, skiing, hiking, berry picking, hot springs, and so much more. I am grateful for all the experiences that mountains bring, which is why I chose mountains for my answer, and I will vacation to the ocean. |
