It is very apparent that over the past year, Covid-19 has taken a detrimental hit on American economic development. As unemployment rates began to rise at the start of the pandemic, action needed to be taken in order to keep the country out of a deflationary spiral. This action came in the form of stimulus checks. While the idea of giving out money in efforts to promote the financial growth that businesses and community entities desperately needed at first seemed doable, it didn't necessarily initiate a motive for those receiving unemployment to hop right back in to the work force. Would this money have been better used if jobs were created and people had an opportunity to get paid so they could stimulate the economy while being temporarily unemployed? If not, then was the rational for distributing this money evenly due to the wavering stance of the economy acceptable?

No this money couldn’t have been better used. Some families and independent people needed it in order to keep going. Others used it as a bonus check. It’s just what happens. There’s always pros and cons, but overall I believe the stimulus check was a good thing to put some people back on their feet.

I agree the first one was a good idea but is the fourth?

You are right I’m saying that some families were dependent on those checks. Do you think that more planning and/or research should have been done on who gets stimulus checks and who doesn’t?

I agree that the stimulus check had a good purpose, however I do feel that it could’ve been applied better in the eyes of American people. In hindsight, the government should have established requirements in which the money could be spent.

There are many different options on how to stimulate the economy during a crisis and they choice to go with the effective but not always even stimulus check. The checks varied depending on household but the government can not make sure that every 328.2 million people are exactly equal. What should happen now, that the pandemic is over. We should stop the stimulus checks.

We should've stopped sending them after the second one.

Even though income played a role in dispersing stimulus checks, people probably weren't going to voluntarily start spending money just to stimulate the economy unless that money was given to them.

Exactly. There were a lot of people that took advantage of the stimulus checks and it’s best that we stop them now.

The stimulus checks should have been gone 6 months ago. We are giving the society’s people an excuse to not work.

The purpose behind the first round of stimulus checks was to reignite the stagnant economy. This didn't go as planned as most people spent their money on unneeded luxuries and saw that this check was even better than their previous paycheck while working. This forms the thought that unemployment equals new toys paid for by the government. Now that everyone is allowed to return to work, nobody really wants to since life before was so comfortable. Continuing to send out stimulus checks is hurting our nation by ruining the mindset of this being the land of the opportunity, a place where if you work hard you will succeed more. It was a good idea at first but now it's just a simple minded very short term solution.

The initial idea behind stimulus checks was okay but not very well planned out for future impact. People really began to use it as more of an excuse instead of how it was intended to be used.

Well put. The U.S. needs a better plan for the long term, because this will not solve our economic issues.

I disagree that life was comfortable during the pandemic. It may have been less apparent living in Salmon, but in almost every other place in the world the pandemic was nothing but hard times and a financial crisis.

Yes, it is an outdated solution at this point. We come from a place of privilege so it’s easy to see ourselves as the victims but really, we need to all get back on our feet and kickstart the economy with being productive.

The purpose of the stimulus check was to get people spending money, and that is exactly what people did with that check. However it was not on products that we typically consider normal. Many people spent it on new toys, fashion, or even gambled it away, but in the end it helped indirectly stimulate the economy as it got people in the mindset to spend money. I do feel the intention behind the stimulus check were good, although I think that the way it was developed and distributed could have been more effective. The stimulus gave people to much freedom, and this freedom took away from the true potential the stimulus check was meant to have.

Like you say, the money was not spent wisely. It did not serve the purpose it was intended to, and therefore didn’t stimulate the economy like expected.

The money couldn’t have been used to creat jobs because governments shut down places of work. Creating more jobs with that money would defeat the idea of why the lockdowns were implemented. Not all of the checks were big enough to do what they were intended for though; feeding families while parents couldn’t work. Because of this, they weren’t spent in the way intended and, when jobs opened back up, some of the programs putting money in their pockets paid better than their actual jobs. In these ways, the stimulus checks actually caused some problems. At this point in the pandemic, people should be working again and we should know how to protect the vulnerable. Because of this, stimulus checks shouldn’t be necessary.

Money cannot create jobs when people aren’t allowed to work. People needed to just be allowed to continue their jobs for the economy to remain in tact.

You are right all of the money could not go back into the pockets of smaller businesses instead they went to businesses like Amazon where they can deliver the packages to you.

The rationale behind the first set of stimulus checks was to jump start an economy that was not growing. This though proved to not work as the pandemic and shutdowns lasted longer than expected. This then made way for another round of stimulus checks, again seeming not to make a difference. So, people at this point have shown that what they need is a job, not more government handouts. At this time more stimulus checks would be unacceptable when they have not got the economy going the last few times.

While we should not always give government handouts during this pandemic we did need to do something.
