For centuries America has been the land of opportunities. We have opened our arms to the world and allow for most cultures to have a place in the 'land of the free'. Although, for some we struggle to give them this chance at a new life. Within the last decade there has been a devastating amount of illegal immigrants coming from the neighboring country of Mexico. An average of 250 billion dollars is spent every year on these unregistered citizens. From a financial standpoint this approach is unrealistic and inconclusive. To counter this, active illegal aliens have been the foundation to our society. They provide a helping hand to anyone that will give them a chance, and do so for minimal pay. Immigrants are the backbone to our economy and a vital advocate to the success of the American dream. Provoking the question of controversy, should active undocumented citizens still be considered illegal?

Undocumented citizens should continue to be illegal. Illegal immigrants can be scary. Until documented we have no idea who they are and what they’ve done before. These people could be cold-blooded killers and we wouldn’t even know their name. Illegal immigrants are also just gleaning off our resources as a country. Only legal citizens should be able to do such things. Keeping these immigrants out has been better. Illegal immigration to the U.S. has significantly declined since the early 2000’s. Going from half a million to around 40,000 yearly illegal immigrants crossing into the United States. Even though these immigrants are just trying to create a better life for themselves, I do believe they continue to be illegal.

It's impossible for borders to know an immigrant's true intentions, so until we can know one's backround and plans they must wait to enter.

We do not know exactly who crosses the border, so we cannot be sure what kind of person they are. Many do just want a better life, but they can do it legally.

All undocumented people should be considered illegal and not citizens. In order to be considered a citizen they must enter the country legally and be accounted for. We have no clue who these people are or what they are capable of doing. Many illegal aliens are trafficking drugs and children and we have no way to find them or track them. An average of 250 billion dollars per year is spent on illegal immigrants who provide very little or cause harm in return. They are also taking advantage of government programs that they don’t pay for in taxes. If immigrants wish to become citizens they must go through the correct process and do so legally. We cannot have people in the country that are unwilling to become documented and a true citizen. As a country we need to take the proper precautions to keep our country safe even if that means building a wall. If immigrants truly want to live in our great nation they will do so legally and not have to be undocumented citizens or illegal aliens.

There really is no way to tell who, or what type of people the illegal immigrants are. Even if we think an illegal immigrant is safe, is it fine for them to stay? Or what if we think that one is dangerous?

The process to become a citizen can take a long time. Do you think that the wait is worth the benefits of being a legal citizen?

The United States was formed from immigration. Almost all current citizens came from another country for a better life in America, but after the country began to develop, the founders quickly realized that they must control who can come to live, and who has to leave. They could not have murders, hosts of diseases, or fugitives enter the newly forming country so they would not allow them to stay. This is the same case today. Many illegal aliens will attempt to stay without obtaining citizenship to take advantage of the successful country, but they must be sent back. We cannot have active undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. since there is no way of knowing their true intentions. I do believe that many are looking for a better life and need to come to survive, but until we can confidently perform full background checks, undocumented aliens must remain illegal.

That is a good plan. Until all if them can be accounted for they should continue to be illegal.

In order to keep the country safe, immigrants must come legally. It does not matter where the immigrants are from, only that they can be trusted.

This is a good perspective to look at America. We were all at one point immigrants, except natives.

Now that we have a developed country, we must take action to keep it this way. America has always had open arms for hard working people who wish to make a better life for themselves but until we can trust their intentions, we must promote them earning citizenship and coming into this country legally.

Allowing people into the country who do not want to take the appropriate path to citizenship should be considered illegal. It is negative on all sides. Being undocumented, they perform cheap labor at such a low pay rate that legal citizens can't compete with because of labor laws. The wages of illegals are so low that it is negative to themselves as well. As working citizens, a certain percentage of one's paycheck is taken and used in government programs. Because illegal aliens aren't citizens, they don't pay taxes and contribute to those programs. Unfortunately, people who are in the US illegally exploit those programs, thus exploiting the working citizens of the US and as said in the prompt, "An average of 250 billion dollars is spent every year on these unregistered [illegal alians]". This does not cause "greatness" it causes division.

Maybe division wouldn’t be so bad. It would help bring down the population. An indirect benefit from such a thing.

I agree there is countless hours and dollars spent on the concept of division, rather than putting those efforts in a positive direction.

Why should we reward people for not taking the appropriate channels? Your views on immigrants eventually punishing themselves with horrible working conditions is a good, but different approach.

Yes, as we all know some undocumented immigrants can be dangerous. Although, the majority of the undocumented population are coming to the U.S. for job opportunities, which means they are working, they are filling jobs such as, construction, agriculture and hospitality. These positions would remain unoccupied without immigrants. Not only are they working, they are paying their taxes, some are even beginning to start their own businesses providing job opportunities. We could argue that undocumented immigrants are taking the jobs of the U.S.-born workers. Yet, in reality they are pursuing the jobs Americans do not find interest in. Not only do these immigrants come here for job purposes, they come to get out of threatening situations, to improve their living situations for not only themselves but their families as well. Undocumented immigrants are bringing in money for economy, as well as occupying jobs. Until undocumented immigration becomes more harmful than helpful I believe it should be legal.

Like everything, there will be good and bad that comes from allowing undocumented peoples into the US. The question isn’t will it be good or will it be bad, rather it’s Will the good outweigh the bad? Do you think illegal immigrants filling jobs that aren’t interesting to the average US citizen outweighs the negative impact of letting the criminals in?

Yes, this is like saying I should be able to hunt without a hunting license. People go shoot all the deer and there aren’t any anymore. The deer represent the jobs in America, by pacing the documentation process, we keep the economy moving fluidly rather than stagnating and crashing due to no jobs.

At first glance the economy looks like it is being flooded by undocumented citizens, however in reality they run our economy, as they do all the jobs that high headed Americans feel to worthy to do.

Having a system were their is not a over abundance of people entering or no people entering does not work for our society that is why we must monitor and control.

While America has always been the land of opportunities it will not be if we make active undocumented citizens legal. While I can see the benefits of having people that work for cheap and are law-abiding people because they are scared to be caught and sent back. If we allow everyone who enters the states to have the same rights as everyone else the then what will stop them from demanding the same pay or making the same illegal mistakes as most citizens. Not everyone that wants to come to America though is law-abiding. That is why we have such an intense screening process to see if we can trust them. If the people that are hard workers want to be in America and become citizens then why don’t they work through the process to become citizens?

The citizenship process can be very extensive but as you said, why wouldn't they become legal if they want to be in America? This could give them even more opportunities then trying to hide from the system.

Rules regarding illegal immigrant status are set in place to regulate the immigrant population and make sure that they are not taking advantage of American entities. America has and always will be the land of opportunities but this also comes with the motive to work for it. Immigrants have the ability to obtain a green card and even work in the US for a certain amount of time without residency so they should be able to go through the process of becoming a citizen legally and for the long term if they wish to continue building a life in America.
