Rachel McKinnon is known as a world champion in competitive cycling. Although she is not awarded with an applause for her accomplishment, instead she receives hateful messages, assumptions of cheating, and death threats. All due to her being a transgender women. Many social media spectators are saying that McKinnon should be participating in male races. McKinnon quickly replies, by informing her audience that she, in fact, is legally a women. Making it forbidden to compete as a male. The abundant amount of comments McKinnon receives, involve that yes, once upon a time she did have testosterone within her body. This would give her an unfair advantage in the races. She replies by saying "I transitioned in 2012. My testosterone levels are so low that they’re undetectable, and have been that way since 2012." Giving her no greater advantage than any other competitor. There is no issue with athletes that are legally transgender. Do you think people who are transgender deserve to have equal opportunities?

It’s clear that transgender athletes want to compete with the same opportunities as all other typical athletes, but since many have already made drastic changes to their physical bodies it is no longer a completely fair competition. Transgender athletes must only compete with fellow transgenders since their bodies are biologically altered. If we continue to allow athletes who were previously the opposite gender to dominate all female events the entire sporting system in the US would develop into a rigged system of only males competing. For our country to continue to give all an equal opportunity to compete in sports, transgender athletes must be allowed compete but it must be done separately.

This goes back to the slavery days. What you suggested we do is basically segregation. Do we really want that?

Transgenders like you say should be given the opportunity to compete, but only as the gender they were born with. It would make no sense to allow any athlete to just choose what gender they compete as.

Yes it is treasonous to have males pretending to be females compete against females. But it is pretty funny so I think it’s alright. People take stuff too seriously these days.

Nothing should hold back transgender people from being given the opportunity to compete, but in order to maintain even competition, it must be done so separately.

Transgender people should have equal opportunities. However they should not be seen as equal. Especially when it comes to sports. Instead of sitting back and letting there be controversy, do something. Set aside sports for specifically transgender people. This is something that can be done very easily and can solve most controversy. When it comes to things like job opportunities, they should be treated as any other person. That being said, the U.S. is a judgemental country. In the near future I don’t see anything changing when it comes to transgender people.

If we were to separate all transgenders from normal male and female divisions of sports would they all be in one of their own divisions? Or would a man that transitioned to a woman be seperated then from one who went from female to male?

Making an entire new division sounds like it would work great. The only problem I can imagine is a lack of funding. Colleges and associations across the nation are already experiencing a lack of funds and cutting funding to sports they already have. Hiring more coaching staff and paying for other necessities would take a large amount of money. Do you think we’d see the same levels of donations and/or enthusiasm towards transgender sport associations?

Yes, we should set aside everything for the transgenders. Including bathrooms, water fountains, and buses. Wait this sounds familiar.

Even if transgenders are allowed to compete in sports with the others is it going to be possible for them to continue to compete? Many of them struggle without being known to the general public and if they were successful many could be bullied away from it.

If the athlete took either testosterone or estrogen, it would make it slightly more fair. This although would still not completely take away from a person’s true gender and abilities.

But if they change from a guy to a girl they basically have been taking steroids their entire life. Performance enhancing drugs in any sport is illegal as far as I know. So therefore they should not be able to do them.

Transgender people must compete against athletes of the gender they were born with. These athletes have a distinct advantage over females in sports whether or not their testosterone levels are low. Men on average have much higher muscle and skeletal mass, and usually a greater lung capacity that cannot be changed with treatment. It is being proven all over the country with athletes such as Rachel McKinnon, that women have an extremely difficult time competing with transgender athletes. For women to go into a competition knowing they are against all odds would be completely demoralizing and possibly terrifying. In order to fix this problem and forbid biological males who are transgender from competing against women, women need to put their foot down and say this is not okay. It may seem as if transgenders would be discriminated against should this happen, but in reality women are the ones being discriminated against when transgenders are allowed to compete against them and most likely win. If nothing is done to prohibit trans athletes from competing against women the sport will eventually be taken over by them, failing to give women a fair chance in the sport or competition.

I agree there must standards or laws set that prevent testosterone pumping males from competing in female sports. If not, this will lead to women's sport being overtaken by male athletes which ultimately prevent a fair field of play for the opposite sex.

There definitely needs to be a line drawn at some point so that biological women still get a fair chance. If transgender women suddenly begin to overtake female sports, what is that showing the next generation of girl athletes? That they don't have as good of a chance and should just give up?

Yes transgendered people are still people too. They just shouldn’t be allowed to pretend to be a gender they are not. I shouldn’t be judged for treating them like the gender they are either. Also, they shouldn’t be allowed to join the military because transgenderism is a mental illness, a soldier shouldn’t be sent out with a mental illness.

This is a unique point, I like the contrasting statements in the initial part of the passage in comparison to your ending statement. How can being transgender be equal to other traditional genders, but yet at the same time be a metal illness?

Transgenders should not receive opportunities that are equal to unaltered humans, as they do not share identical characteristics. In many ways, transgenders are androgynous humans for the reason that they possess both qualities of a male and female. These qualities born into one gender don’t disappear when refashioned into the opposite sex, they stay apart of the individual and involuntarily contribute to their life. This sparks the demand for a plausible solution, in which all forms of a human can move forward in a successful manner. To do this we must first come to the realization that to compare transgenders to the rest of the world will only lead to never ending dispute. They must not be given equal opportunities, but yet completely different opportunities. Creating an alternate way of life for transgenders, eliminating the idea of unfair advantages or disadvantages.

Transgender women are given an unfair advantage in sports due to their underlying masculinity. On the opposite side of the spectrum, transgender men are at a disadvantage because of their inability to work up to the strength and power of naturally born male athletes. In competitions with extremely high stakes, such as the Olympics, rules and stipulations are set in place to give every qualifier a fair chance. This problem we now face with the addition of transgender people into the games provokes the question of what the true definition of "fair competition" is in the sports world. At this point in time, there is no clear way to one hundred percent factually prove that a transgender woman is equivalent to a born woman and vise versa for men. This is why until there is a way to know this, transgender athletes should remain competitive against their born gender.
