With the economy on a downward trend again, millions have already lost their jobs, and tens of thousands falling victim to the COVID-19 virus, it is hard to determine where the US should take its next step under the Biden Administration. When COVID first emerged, some argued we shouldn't be doing much at all. 31 January 2020, Nacy Pelosi proposed the No Ban Act which would prevent the Travel Bans that the Trump administration was working to put in place. Leading up to the last election, the media has been criticizing Trump for not acting fast enough. An article published by the daily wire, https://www.dailywire.com/.../walsh-governor-cuomo-says..., describes the New York Governor's, Andrew Cuomo, theme that if these statewide shutdowns can save even one life, it will be worth it. Some would argue that people die in car accidents every day but we do not close our highways to save those lives so why close the economy. Ultimately, this all begs the question, should our economy ever have been jeopardized in the first place with the closing of businesses to entire states, and should we look to shutdowns again if we see another surge in COVID, or were the repercussions too much?

The economy should never close again for COVID-19. The virus is still running its course but it’s almost been through everyone. Along with this we have vaccinations that are going around as quickly as possible. Antibodies are being made so there would be no reason to close everything down. Closing and shutting everything down will only hurt our country and is completely unnecessary

Shutting down the country at this point would be unnecessary. Enough people either have antibodies or are able to be vaccinated, allowing people to not fear the virus.

Shutting down the economy damaged more lives than saved. It’s now been proven that shutdowns are not effective. Your bring up a great point that vaccinations are now available and contribute to solving this problem.

I would straight up move out of the states if the economy closed down again. That’s not supposed to happen, the economy is supposed to be something that never stops, not a toy in politics.

It's unnecessary to close for something that will repeatedly return regardless. Everyone has to accept that it will remain in our world no matter what we do to try and get rid of it.

The economy should not be jeopardized a second time even if we do see a surge. There is now a vaccine, so if anyone is scared of the virus they can get vaccinated. What would be the point of a vaccine if people can’t feel safe with it. Shutting down the country the first time could be seen as a good thing, but a second time would be irrational.

If one is worried then they should be vaccinated! It seems that each new vaccine is becoming more effective. What would be the point of getting vaccinated if it doesn’t work well enough to let people do everyday activities again?

A second time would be irrational. It could also jeopardize the money flow of our economy.

A second time would for sure send us into a depression if not worse.

The vaccine should allow for society to return even closer back to normal. There's no reason to shut down like we did back when COVID-19 first came out.

Shutting down the economy again is extremely irrational and if we do have a vaccine do we even have to wear masks anymore.

Like you said, we now have options for people who feel that Covid still needs to be suppressed. They could get vaccinated, wear a mask, social distance, or do whatever they wish since it is a free country and no one is going to stop them, but it shouldn't be detrimental to the country as a whole such as a second shutdown.

No that was just a scheme to make Donald Trump look bad since the only thing he really had going for him was the boosted economy. Take that away from him and your left with an orange man everyone hates.

Except he still has all the business power in the world. Minus that you are completely correct.

The economy must always remain open for the country to remain functional. At the time when everything was first shut down, nobody knew exactly what COVID-19 would do to our country. Now everyone understands how to protect themselves while also remaining a functional member of society. COVID-19 isn't going away, the only option is to live with it and keep the world running as smooth as possible.

COVID, like you say, is not going away. We have a vaccine though and we have to move forward. Our country will be hurt more by keeping shut down than opening up and allowing it to run smoothly.

Yes we just have to understand our current reality and we can not shut down our economy again.

Additionally I don't think that our economy will be able to fully recover and thrive if we undergo another shutdown, however if the benefits include the saving of human life then that sacrifice will be worth it.

When the virus first appeared we needed a temporary prevention method which has minimizing contact with people. Most states went into lockdown damaging the economy, but as we learned our country is not a one size fits all and we needed a long term solution. Our country is extremely diverse we have small towns like Salmon and huge cities like New York City. Therefore, having a nation wide lockdown is not practical for places like Salmon; where our contact with people is minimal and we are more reliant on small business. In places like New York City though, you can not step outside with out touching people and is run on big businesses that can adapt to the changes. That is why when we first went into lockdown small towns were hurt the most, but no one not even people in big cites want to be shut down because it still affects them so that is why we need to look at our more long term solution of the vaccine (or if you prefer using the bodies natural anti-bodies) turning the virus into something like the flu.

Yes, I feel that a long term solution is much better than a temporary shutdown as it solve both our economic problems and the COVID-19 deaths.

To receive a devastating hit in financial sustainability, one can easily recover and grow from that experience. It is impossible to fully recover from a permanent loss of a loved one. In the United States, as a first world country, individuals tend to get preoccupied with nonessential concepts, such as sports, entertainment, and ultimately financial success that they don’t see value in the necessities of family and life. We become so emotionally attached to these actives within our leisure, that they appear to be a requisite to a happy life. It is only until we get a ‘new perspective’ that we can reflect on the importance of our previous beliefs. I think the arrival of COVID-19 is unusually beneficial and will present that new perspective. We will consider this not an attempt to jeopardize the economy, but an eye opener to financial prosperity and its inability to produce happiness

People, especially first world Americans are very ignorant to the effects that disease can have on places that lack the medical technology we are fortunate to have. If somehow everyone could view this experience as through the new perspective you talk about then we would all be more willing to work together to get the country back on it's feet socially and economically.

At the height of the virus, I believe the repercussions and mandates were not entirely extensive. While it may have seemed that way at first, this was not something we as a country or a world have had to deal with for a long time so the safety of the people was obviously a first priority. Where things got messy was when mandates were not lifted and suddenly people felt like they had to live in fear that Covid was never going to end. These shutdowns were supposed to be temporary, not permanent. Now that we have lived through this experience, learned how to combat it, and can take away new knowledge and see the pros and cons of the decisions made during the pandemic, we can avoid another shutdown if this were to happen again.
