Baby You is Adult You (Andy Gebhardt)

In light of all the bad things that are happening at the moment, I decided to do a topic that is more fun and not talking about the Coronavirus directly. I think we all need a topic where we can have fun and talk about something that influences our character or is influenced by our character. As seniors, we have to pick a baby picture that will be shown at graduation, whatever it will look like and that picture is usually quite amusing. So this is my question, when you were younger, was there a baby picture you had that showed anything about who you are today? If not, is there a funny story related to it?

Personally, I have some pretty interesting pictures that are somewhat random but also mean a lot to me. One of them is a picture of me eating watermelon and being a complete mess. I believe this shows that: 1) I love food 2) I love watermelon and 3) I don’t mind making a mess or getting dirty to get something done or what I want. The first two ideas are not as important but I think the third defines somewhat who I am. I am always willing to work hard and try my best (in that case finishing the watermelon) in any endeavor I am in. I believe that this applies to my life in academics, sports, and even work. While it may seem cheesy, it is an idea that represents who I am and how I have grown up.
So if you have a picture or a memory or something in your childhood that represents who you are now, then talk about that. Our lives have been changed drastically by this virus but the people we are and the beliefs we hold stay the same. So what makes you who you are? Why does a baby picture capture who you are now so well? If you want to, feel free to share the picture too so everyone can see the example.

The picture I found was kind of funny. The back story is that in the mall the police officers wanted me to get on the snowmobile that was parked there and I didn’t want to but then they gave me a sucker and I did it. I think it’s funny now because a lot of the time I don’t want to do thing but I usually always do for people with a little prompting. Suckers still work too.

This isn't super relative to your post, but your beginning about the police reminded me of a funny story from when I was a kid. Somewhere in a movie I had picked up that cops were bad. My mom and I were walking into the grocery store and I saw a police officer, little me pointed at this officer and yelled, "It's the cops, run!", and tried taking off in the parking lot. I guess after that the police officer gave me a sticker, and then I wasn't scared of them anymore.

The first picture I think of when I read this prompt was a picture of me when I was probably 5 or 6. In this picture, I was at the local fair eating an ice cream cone while holding a bag of cotton candy in the same hand, wearing a mermaid necklace and a shirt with SpongeBob Squarepants and the saying "Sweet Thang" on it. I don't want to brag or anything, but I still think that I am a "Sweet Thang". Kidding, but my entire life I have always strived to be a kind person and spread positivity and love no matter where I go. I also still throughly enjoy SpongeBob Squarepants and eating (non-dairy) ice cream because it turns out the older you get, the more you have to accept the unfortunate reality that you are lactose intolerant.

Why can I picture this so well? I suppose you will forever have to get almond milk in your coffee.

That is rough that you cannot eat real ice cream anymore. It is also cool that you have always lived with that kind of motto. Do you think you have done a good job of it?

I'm also the same way, having to eat non-dairy ice cream or literally not having anything that contains dairy.

You and your coconut milk mocha frappes. At least you had your time as a child to have regular milk. Coconut milk is only $0.50 more though.

I have an attachment to all of my baby pictures because I was honestly the cutest baby/child I've ever seen. One in particular that I like is when I was around two. It was professionally taken so it’s not funny or anything, but it just shows the attitude I had when I was little that has carried on into my older age. I have a confident smile on my face but it’s almost a smirk. My curls are done perfectly and I just know that I’m the coolest kid on the block. Unfortunately, that hasn’t followed me into my teenage years, but I still have some of the confidence. I would say a lot of things that you probably aren't supposed to say to people’s faces, like telling my uncle he was fat, or saying that I wanted to be a Bratz doll because I liked that they wore immodest clothes, and that brashness has stayed with me for better or for worse. I have my redeeming qualities too, but that mischievous smile is my favorite.

I think I need to see these pictures. I also think it's funny that you were so straight forward at a younger age ahah

Agreed, we need to see the picture. It is cool that you kept many of those qualities into who you are now. I think a lot of people change so much when they get to be adults and it is hard to see the same person they were. Did you retake a senior picture with that same kind of look?

I like how you were really confident and straightforward when you were younger. Its funny when we look back and see how much, or little, we changed in certain aspects.

I was always camera shy when I was younger so a lot of the photos that I am in are always me looking away or hiding somewhere. Photos where I was sitting still and smiling at the camera are kinda rare, but I remember this one photo where I was riding a tricycle in our driveway. The tricycle was red and had a bell where I would always ring it when I was riding it. In the photo, I was looking down and was wearing a pink heart-shaped sunglasses. I was outgoing as a child and would be always outside exploring, riding that tricycle, and imagining that I am in a different world. My love for going on bike rides, exploring, and seeing different areas or things never really changed. I am still also outgoing but I usually show it when I am around family or people who I am most comfortable with.

I was the same way, in my family's business I would talk to customers when they were checking out, even when I couldn't see past the counter I'd jump up and flash the biggest smile I could. I tried my best to be friendly.

I was a lot more outgoing as a kid too and as you said that’s really reserved for my family and close friends. It’s exciting to see that most of us aren’t too different.

I have a baby picture where I'm sitting on the couch wearing mismatched socks with my hair a mess why I'm eating a cracker. I feel like this is very similar to me today because I was eating ice cream in bed with my hair in a messy bun with mismatched socks on when I found that picture. This doesn't say much about me except that I like to eat and I don't care about my socks or hair. I'm glad that I am comfortable with who I am and I'm good with being myself wherever I am and with whoever I'm with.

The baby photo that comes to my mind is one of me actually in the hospital. If any of you have ever looked closely at my face, you will notice the scar in my left eyebrow. It has been like that since I was four years old, and even now I always get comments on it, asking what happened, etc. The story behind it is, my dad had told me to go "jump in the tub", so I took this very literally, and jumped into the bathtub, slipping and hitting my face on the faucet. I was taken to the hospital, while my older sister was freaking out that I was going to die at home. I had to get four stitches, and was completely intrigued by them. I also got to choose a stuffed bear, which I still have, his name is Red.. (he is a red bear). After that I was on the phone with Brooke letting her know I was going to be okay, and I exclaimed... "Next time, when I break this eyebrow, I want to come back here!" I wanted the other bear they had me choose between. This story and the photo show a lot about me. It was the first time I had been intrigued by the doctors and medicine, and that entire world, which is still an interest now. It also shows how I am able to get through scary things, and make dumb choices.

It's nice to see how our interests follow us and evolve as we age. I like to see the crazy and childish side to my personality as well. It's always fun to see how we have changed and how we have stayed the same over time.

A baby photo that has a lot of meaning to me is once whwre I am simply sitting around with a huge smile on my face. I’m this photo I am a hefty sized baby and this is also the one I have chosen for my senior baby picture. I believe this represents how no matter what situation I am in, I can also have a great time. Whether I’m with people I usually hang out with or no, and if we are doing something I’m not fond of, I can always find a way to make it fun for myself and enjoy my time. Another picture is one where my face is covered in cheese and I am mowing down on it as fast as I can. I am a big fan of cheese and most food in general. I love to eat and while I can be an slags then eater there are also times where my goal is to consume as much food as humanly possible in the shortest amount of time.

A picture exists where I am in my carseat. clearly I'm upset about what I have done, but while nobody was looking I took an Oreo and smeared it all over my face. It shows that I am messy and I love sweet things basically I'll do anything for chocolate. I also really just like the picture it is a meme in my family.

When I was two-years-old, my parents took a picture of me on my tiptoes, reaching to my dad’s keyboard to play some notes. I was completely happy to push the keys and make sounds, kickstarting my life as a musician. This led to piano lessons from my dad, which eventually led to my mother taking me to my weekly group and private violin lessons. I hated it at first because it was a lot of dedication to practice every day (well, almost every day). Over time, my love for music grew, which made me want to play for others. Sharing my music is the greatest feeling, and I am so thankful for growing up with music.

As a young child, my mom would put me in cute dresses, buy me Barbie dolls, and had at some point signed me up for ballet class. I never paid much interest in these things though, I had a pair of denim overalls that I really liked wearing, and would often neglect the Barbies in favor of the Tonka trucks my dad bought me. Later on, when I was about seven, I stopped doing ballet and joined Kung Fu.

This tells me that my interests are on the constructive and "practical" side. I like to create new things and understand them, and also improving upon myself in a way that will make me stronger.

When I was little my parents dressed me up really “girlie” and my hair was always done etc. I also had a big personality in a lot of the photos. You would also never find me in pictures alone. I only like to take them with my siblings or cousins. Now I don’t really put too much thought into how I dress or do my hair. I also have a quiet personality. Who I am now I would say is very different from who I was then. One thing that has stayed the same is that I only take pictures with my siblings or if given the choice prefer not to take them at all. This reflects who I am as a person because I am always with my family and would consider them my closest friends.
