Quarantine Continues... (Erykah Foss)

We are living in unprecedented times that none of us have experienced before. The entire world has been forced to come to terms with COVID-19. With all respect for those affected by the virus, it is time to reevaluate the effectiveness of government-mandated quarantine. After living in this quarantine for the past month, there are some people who are tired of being unemployed, not being able to support their families. This has led to protests in around 20 states. In Washington State, Tyler Miller is a protest organizer who believes that Governor Inslee should not have control over who is allowed to go outside. Although his political views are against their required quarantine, he still believes in taking precautions: "The fact I am protesting does not mean I think it is a good idea to have gatherings, I just believe that the government has no authority to prohibit them."

On the other side, Mary Turner, who works as a head nurse in an intensive care unit in Minnesota, was disappointed when she started hearing about the protests: “These protests here are so discouraging. With no one doing social distancing or wearing masks, and they all say they are outraged. I don't know if this is a problem anywhere else in the world.” If you are interested in reading more about the protests and other people’s opinions on how our country is dealing with corona, I highly recommend this BBC article (which is also where I got the quotes above): https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-52417610

Here is another interesting (and short) article where two doctors explain why we should go back to normal: https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2020/04/26/doctor_after_doing_
5000_coronavirus_tests_its_similar_to_the_flu_and_quarantine_should_end.html

They believe that “COVID-19 is no more dangerous than a normal seasonal flu and quarantines are not making any difference in preventing its spread.”

So here are my questions for you: Do you agree that people should go back to work or should they continue to stay at home? Are there enough restrictions around quarantine or should there be any at all? Are the government mandates truly driven by accurate scientific evidence? Do you think we should have stopped quarantine a few weeks ago or should we continue through May?

Innocence & Childhood

Last year a few of us had a great discussion about what defines innocence and childhood. We came to the conclusion that everyone’s opinion differs widely. Not everyone got a chance to participate in the discussion so I thought I would bring it back and give everyone a chance to express their opinion. What is the definition of innocence? What makes up a childhood and does everyone have one? Is there anything that we collectively do as a society to maintain the idea of innocence and childhood longer? Is there more than one type of innocence? My final questions are when did you lose your innocence and childhood or do you think you are still living in it?
Personally a lot of the experiences that I had in my childhood made me who I am today. If I had not had a lot of the things happen to me or my family that I did I think I would be a very different person. I might be more outgoing or less understanding of people etc. I believe that we are a collection of our experiences. I believe that my childhood and certain innocences ended a while back due to those same personal experiences.

America's Big Cat Ownership Policy (Kately)

Because the pandemic has kept many people at home, many turn to Netflix as a source of entertainment. A show called Tiger King has risen in popularity, mostly due to its unusual cast. Joe Exotic is a man of questionable morals, and Carole Baskin is a women accused of murdering her husband. Both are bitter rivals in a cutthroat industry of conservationists and collectors. Regardless if you have seen it or not, it has brought up a question that is very important. Should people be able to privately own big cats and other large predators? Many private big cat owners claim that it is no different than the 5th amendment,  The series has shown several violations and scandals that several tiger tycoons have committed. In Zanesville, Ohio, private zoo owner Terry Thompson released 18 tigers, 17 lions, 8 bears, 3 cougars, 2 wolves, 1 baboon, and a Macaque (small primate) on the town before committing suicide. It was a miracle that no one was killed, but local police were forced to kill 49 predators. Many speculate that the expenses of taking care of so many demanding animals became financially overbearing for the man.

A common form of financial income in this industry comes from cub petting events, where the public goes to take pictures, bottle feed, and play with baby tigers. The cubs are killed when they become too big for these events.

There are no Federal Laws that prohibit private ownership of these animals, though there is a bill in Congress as of now

More information here: https://aldf.org/project/big-cat-public-safety-act-federal/

Have any of you watched Tiger King? What laws should be in place? What can be done about the over-saturated population in captivity, while its numbers continue to dwindle in the wild?

School From Home

So we all know that online schooling has started this week and that I might be like this for the rest of the school year. It has been a pretty hard transition for me, and I know it has been difficult for others. With classes like Physics, Business Math, and English It just feels like a lot of homework to do. The other problem I have been facing is not feeling compelled to work because I am a really bad procrastinator, so this last week I did all my homework the day before it was due. It literally took me all day, and physics is hard because I do not know how to do it. Overall this first week of school has been kinda rough. I want to know what you guys are thinking about online school. Do you guys think that it is harder than regular school? If you had a choice would you rather be back in school by now? If you could change anything about online school what would you change?

Finding the Good

The world today has been full of uncertainties and our lives have drastically changed. One day we wake up like any other day, go see our friends at school and the next we are practicing social distancing for our safety, and the safety of those around us. The quarantine is especially difficult for our generation,  we are at the age of branching out from the home to find our path in life. It can be difficult to watch and wait. It is scary to turn on the news and watch as Covid-19 progresses with no clear end in sight, the media is filled with bad news. Seeing our families concerned, and worrying about the health of friends and loved ones that can not be with us at this time is all unsettling. However, I have tried even though it is very difficult sometimes to find the positive in this situation. Because of the quarantine and social distancing, I have been able to reconnect with my family again. Sitting down at the table and eating homecooked dinner. lunches used to be a rarity because of my mother’s and I’s busy lifestyle. Now it has become a time we both savor. I have also had time to get into some of my old hobbies again; working with clay and playing guitar. I have also learned that life is a precious gift and to never take a single second of time spent with friends or family for granted. My questions for you are. How have you been coping with our current situation that is affecting our entire world? What are some positive attributes that have come from this circumstance? What has all of this taught you in general and about yourself?
