"Where they have burned books, they will end in burning human beings."
                                                                                           - Heinrich Heine (1821)

Explain the quote above.  Why do you think Heine makes the leap from burning books to burning people?  What are some cultures you are aware of that burn books?  Are those cultures also dangerous to people?

To me this quote means the more books we burn and that level of censorship that this shows will lead to us burning people to stop the rebellion or stop us from learning this knowledge. Some of these cultures could be us or places where they don't want people getting certain ideas. I think these places could be dangerous because it can give the government the power to fully control what you see and "Brainwash" you in a way.

When they are burning books it burns the past as well which is a significant part of human culture. He is burning the books and the human culture connected to the books.

Cultures that have strong and strict beliefs sometimes burn books to get rid of the past and keep control. Yes those cultures are dangerous potentially because they have a lot of power especially over the people in the culture.

It won't go to that extreme if it isnt a tyrannical government. but book burning is trying to shield you from something you disagree with which is silly. The people that only become dangerous burning knowledge are only the ones who refuse to think and see for them self so they will only become stupid in a reckless way.

He compares burning books to burning people because when you burn books you destroy different people's points of view and ideas. What comes to mind when I think of people burning books is the Nazis. The Nazis culture was dangerous because they thought that everyone should think the same and have the same ideas. They thought different ideas and cultures were threatening to their way of life.

I think he made that leap because in some cultures books can relate to a way of life and religion. If they burn the books that they are living their life out of, than they ultimately result to burning people so that is what I think he means by that. I think some cultures are dangerous to people because if they are burning people from the same culture, what is stopping them from burning you when it comes down to it.

Burning books symbolize getting rid of the history that people write down to be gone. Erasing any trace of when or what they did in their time. Society will start to fight back with each other with power and strength not caring for anyone else but themselves.

I think Heine makes that leap because he noticed that burning books comes from a lack of respect to other things and then said it ends in what thought was the logical extreme. The Taliban burn books. They can be extreme and hurt people because of their views.

I think that Heine makes the leap from burning books to burning people because books have knowledge, and if you remove all knowledge, then you might as well burn us. In Nazi Germany, the students who were pro-Nazi burned thousands of books because they were deemed "un-German." Those cultures can be dangerous to people because they take away their chance to learn new ideas.

I think he makes the leap from burning books to burning people because people often get burnt because of books if it went against something they believed in or if the books made the people believe they had to burn a certain group, like in the Salem witch trials.
Some cultures I know burn were certain religious groups and they were dangerous to people who didn't;t fit their believes.

I think Heinrich Heine takes the leap from burning books to people because it shows that once the books are gone people will continue to find a way to express themselves, until you eventually get rid of the human so they can't have anymore ideas. Cultures will burn books to get rid of the "wrong" beliefs and keep control over their people. These cultures can be dangerous as it gives people no sense of self, without their beliefs they wouldn't know what to do.

I believe this quote means that burning books is burning up our history, and our knowledge, it shows a level of sensorship that can escalate very quickly, while they may start at banning books, it may end in complete sensorship of the people.

Books encourage us to learn and think. They provide new information or perspectives for the readers. They can carry the culture, history, or dreams of any individual or society. They carry the lessons we learn, and in a way, the lives and time spent to learn it. Destroying the books means losing or destroying all that it took to make them. It removes the information and the lessons from the people now and in the future. It may just as well destroy them also.

The quote shows that all the violence starts with just books then when people are no longer afraid they will start burning people and only get worse from there. These countries are dangerous to people because they almost always forget about limits and defy the statutes of man.

When he says this quote about burning books will lead to burning people, I think he means how if we burn the knowledge we have it will eventually catch up to us and will hurt us. One culture that burn books is Nazi, Germany, and some people might say that they are a dangerous people.

Books tell stories of peoples lives so if we get rid of them then those stories of the people will not be told and people will be forgotten. A culture that would burn books is the Roman Empire. They would burn books to assert power and control.

Heine probably makes a leap from burning books to burning people because he is saying that if we take away books and imagination, history, people will eventually "burn" too. Books are needed for humanity to flourish. Some cultures that burn books was the Roman Empire and Nazi Germany. I would say that they are dangerous because they are taking away stories of others, beliefs, and things that are most important to people.

Burning books is a very vigorous action to do and can result in people that have strong opinions revolting. When people rebel, people will go from burning books to burning people after being fed up with it all. In world war II the Nazis burnt books to hid the Jewish religion away. The Nazis were considered dangerous and unfortunately ended up killing millions of people.

Burning books is a way to silence people and what they believe. I think that the author escalated to burning people because whe they are burning books they are burning a person's work and opinion. One group I know of that burned books was the Nazis who were dangerous to peole becajuse they did more then just burning books.
