Daily Literary Quote
“Time changes all things; there is no reason why language should escape this universal law” - Ferdinand de Saussure Journal Prompt What are some (appropriate) English words whose meanings have changed over time? How do the earlier meanings compare with today's meanings? Why do you think language changes over time?

Cap used to mean hat or lid. Now people use it to call out a lie. I think language changes over time because people are too lazy to use real sentences so they use other words to get their point across

Bully as it means now is someone who would make fun of you, make your day worse. The old meaning is meant in "sweetheart" as the Dutch word for lover.

I think launguage changes over time because we are always learning new things. Language is constantly adapting to each generation which is why it changes so much. For example the word cloud use to mean something that was solid and now it means a mass filled with condensed water vapor in the sky.

Pretty used to carry the meaning of crafty and skillful, it is now a word to describe someone with good looks. Nice took on the meaning of something pleasant, but before it meant someone was attentive and sharp. Language is constantly changing because we are always discovering new things, and ideas.

I think language changes because people and technology change over time. The word nervous has changed over time, it used to relate with the actual nerves now people use it to say they are vigorous. Flirt is another word that has changed meaning over time, it used to describe something that fluttered like a birds wing, now people use flirt to descibe someone trying to attract another person.

I think throughout time people have tried to think of more slang to add into our vocab so we just start using random words and change their meanings. This also can come from celebrities and social media, we follow. Gay used to be used as happy, naughty meant you had nothing, bachelor used to mean a young man, now it is used to describe the lowest rank at a university.

Some words meanings that have changed are, nice, cute, and meat. Nice started as a negative term now we use it as a positive one, cute used to mean sharp or brilliant but now we use it to express attraction, meat used to refer to all solid food. I think language changes because we keep inventing new words that describe certain things down to a fine line.

Awesome use to mean "Awe-Inspiring" now it just means very good. They shift and change like the tides in the ocean, the seasons change and the clouds can roll in and alter the original meanings.

Naughty. In this society "naughty" means not nice, bad, etc. In the past "naught" meant nothing.

The word gay has changed over time, it once used to mean to be happy or enlightened, it now refers to being homosexual. I think language changes to fit how we talk in our time. we change the language we speak to fit our needs better.
