Journal Prompt
The pilgrims in The Canterbury Tales are often referenced only by their occupations (ie. the Knight, the Miller, the Wife of Bath), highlighting their roles in society. Are our occupations still influential in forming our identities? If so, how? Provide some specific examples to support your opinion.

I believe that they still are because for example if a person is in a job with customer service they are most like really talkative and nice.

I don't know about that, there is a lot of rude people in customer service jobs.

I think an occupation or job can change the way someone is. For example, if someone worked in customer service, they would likely change to be more kind to fulfill their job.

I do believe occupations still do influence in the making our identities.I feel that people in the emergency department are very calm a cool and collected.

I would say that our jobs do play a slight role in who we are as people. Construction workers put up with horrible weather conditions and they continue to do their jobs and it makes them stronger as people. Cooks put up with complaints and horrible customers every second of every day and develop a hard exterior that helps them not give a crap about what anyone says.

I believe that occupation is very informative of identity. For example, think about how similar all mechanics are to one another. I think that people of the same career are similar because those careers draw similar people to them rather than the career itself changing the person.

I believe that our occupations definitely play a part in our identity, I say this because with our occupations we still have to be who we are unless we have split personalities.

I would say so. people with office jobs or diplomas are usually put on a higher podium than someone like a welder or plumber but in reality a welder or a plumber might make as much or more than a lot of educated workers.

In a way yes because people with good jobs and lots of money are seen higher than poor or people who work crappy jobs

I would say yes to our occupations being an influential form of our identities. For instance if you make a lot of money people tend to see you as a higher person this causes people to think they are better than others.

Yes for example you wouldn't tell someone that Bob came over and fixed the toilet, you would just say the plumber came by and fixed the toilet.

I believe that it is still a true point. For example if someone's job is working at a daycare they are going to be good with kids outside of work too.

yes, depending on jobs and pay rate i think it puts you in a certain group. for example if you're a doctor with high pay people may look up to you.

I would say that your occupation could give hints of the type of person you are but I do not think it makes you as a person. Although doctors are typically seen as helpful and kind people, becoming a doctor does not instantly make you a "good person".

Occupations are still influential on our identities but not as much as they were. It doesn't apply to every job, but for example you refer to coaches just by coach.

Your jobs determine what “social group” you belong in. If you make more money people will want to be your friend more.

I think they do because someone's job is usually what they spend most of their time doing, meaning it is one of the most identity changing activites. Your boss, coworkers and the actual physical work could change the way you think and act. For example, of you work in a community where they use lots of language, youd probably find yourself using the same kind of language.
