Read this article about a tweet of a letter Daniel Radosh sent to his son's teacher, who required a permission slip to read Fahrenheit 451 (in 8th grade). What do you think of his letter to the teacher? What is the irony in requiring parental permission to read the book? What does it demonstrate about our society?

I think that they should not have to have a permission slip at that age. They are old enough to be aware of the world. You should not need to have permission to read a book.

I agree. We should be able to read what ever we want to.

I think that the parent was glad that they are giving people a choice to read books. I think that because it said censorship and parents not wanting their kids to read it. It demonstrates that some parents want their kids to read some books that others don’t want theirs to read.

I agree that the parents were potentially glad to have a say in their kids education.

I like the teachers letter it is true that this will probably never happen. I think it is funny that parents aren’t wanting them to read the book because the book is about not being able to read books. This is demonstrating that this could eventually happen.

I think that he was trying to make a valuable point. The irony is asking for permission for a book about book censorship. Our society doesn't realize the first steps.

the says that are society might not want their kids to read things that could happen in the future. I think the permission slip is good because kids so young may not be able to understand this book

I think they shouldn’t have to have a permission slip. They should be mature enough and old bright to understand that this is fiction and cannot really happen.

You don't think it could eventually get to that point?

I agree but I think that the writer was trying to point out something without stating it clearly.

I love be his fathers letter to the teacher. It shows that he has read the book and has a good grasp on the concepts behind it. Not going to lie I don’t see the irony. It demonstrates that our society is just as controlling as the one in the book. We are afraid that if someone reads a book about banned books than they will want to read those “banned books “

The irony is having censorship on a book about censorship

It is very ironic, restricting the reading of fahrenheit 451, because the book is all about severe censorship. I personally thought that the father's reply was brilliant. It demonstrates that we would rather be comfortable in our own little world instead of standing out

The irony in having a permission slip to read a book is almost presenting books like they're dangerous. It demonstrates that our society could end up like this when you need permission to read something.

I though the letter made alot of sense. The irony is that the book is about book censorship. And it shows that our society is not always completely aware.

I think that when he said he didn’t think it happened it is true and that if they read it then there would be then seeing how bad it is and not let it happen.

I feel that by 8th grade you have the right to knowledge and the right to choosing the books that you read. The irony is needing a permission slip to read a book that is about banning books.

I think most of what the dad said was true but he could have said it better. It is ironic because it is about banning books and you need permission to read it. It demonstrates that our society is heading towards the way the book is.

This book is about not letting people read books, so requiring a permission slip to read the book is pretty ironic

I think it’s dumb you need a permission slip to read a book. It’s ironic because this book is about not reading books. This show that our society might actually enforce this.

I think it was a little bit of an overreaction. The irony is that in the book they are banning books but the kid is getting permission to read the book.
