"Where they have burned books, they will end in burning human beings."
- Heinrich Heine (1821) Explain the quote above. Why do you think Heine makes the leap from burning books to burning people? What are some cultures you are aware of that burn books? Are those cultures also dangerous to people?

Burning books is pretty much destroying people’s hard work and their ideas. I don’t know any culture that burn books that I can think of. I think that they are kinda dangerous because they are taking away people’s freedom of speech.

I think the quote means because we are are burning books, it is like burning people. I think he jumped to this conclusion we put out whole selves in the books we write so it is like burning us. I can’t think of any cultures that burn books but I just think those people don’t know how bad they are make people feel because of the burned books.

I believe he makes the leap from burning books to burning people to show that books shape our society and that books reflect human nature.

The quote goes on about how you are burning the sole of the people by burning their thoughts and ideas. Some of the older cultures burned them because of the ideas that were in them. Those cultures are dangerous to people because they don’t want ideas out there.

He makes the leap because once you start to burn books it is only down hill from there. I only know of the Nazi party that burned books. Yes this culture was very dangerous to people.

Burning books is burning the authors ideas, education, and their time and effort they put in to writing the book. I don’t know of any cultures that burn books but I know there are a lot.

By burning books it means that they are also burning people freedom of learning new ideas and spreading knowledge. One culture that burned books at one point was the Nazi party. At that point it was dangerous for people because it took away their freedom and kept them from sharing and creating new ideas.

I think that she made that jump from burning books to burning humans because books are important to people. And people might sacrifice themselves. I dont know of any cultures but I do know that people like that exist. I think they are a danger to people because they are ruining things that can be important to people and people can get defensive and it could go downhill very fast.

People will end up burning like books because because they will being saying stuff the government doesnt want them to since this is the reason most books were burned for the knowledge they contained. The cultures that have some this are dangerous to people since they want to hide knowledge from others.

I'm not aware that any modern day cultures burn books. Burning books is like burning people's dreams, ideas, and spirit. Any cultures that would willingly burn books should be considered dangerous because it would wilt people's will

I think he makes the leap because if you start burning books which are knowledge you have to do something to stop that knowledge from being found. I know the Nazis used to burn books. Yes I think these cultures can be dangerous.

What this quote means is that when you burn knowledge you end up burning peoples trust in you. Because as a country we have created such amazing work and beautiful creations. Humans will lose so much trust in everything they’ve built and realize that they somehow aren’t good enough.
