Discuss a time you overheard part of a conversation, or walked in partway through, and assumed it was about something completely different (or a time someone else overheard you say something and thought is was about something different). How did you/they find out the truth?

One time I heard my parents talking and I thought it was about a birthday present I was getting. I knew that it wasn’t what I was getting when my birthday came around.😂

This happens all the time. Once I walked into a room where everybody was talking, but when they saw me, they all went silent and stared at me. All of them. That set off a bunch of red flags. So I just.......left.

One time I was talking about one of my friends named Wyatt & my mom assumed I was talking about my little brother. She was confused so she asked me what I was talking about & I explained everything.

Typically I try to stay away from spreading my opinions on what I think happened but people seem to do it a lot. It should never really matter as long as people stick to themselves and their friend groups in order to avoid drama. You never know what someone else is going through but it’s best not to spread stuff. My parents are extremely guilty of assuming I meant something else and it has ruined our family relationships. Just keep to yourself. Usually people never find out the truth.

That happens all the time. I always just say “context?” with a very obvious and exaggerated question mark. The people talking usually just laugh and tell me what is going on. I usually use that a joke but if it is a serious conversation I can usually just turn my attention elsewhere.

You’ve probably said this to me but I didn’t comprehend because I’ve never heard the word “context” used in that situation. Usually people say a diffferent word like “what”.

I overheard people talking about me, and they didn’t know I was there. When I made my presence known, they went really quiet and their faces said it all. It was an “Oh shit,” moment. They quickly went on to explain that it wasn’t what I thought it was.

I enjoy your wordage. If this happened to me I wouldn’t have made my presence known. I just would’ve assumed something and leave. I like how you had the courage to go up to them.

I do this a lot I will here part of a conversation and assume that it is about one thing when the conversation was actually about this completely other thing. I normally don’t intervene or do anything but if I do find out the truth it’s when everything is already worked out.

I do this a lot. I easily focus on something then I’ll just listen to the people around me and it will seem like I’m not even paying attention to them. A bad time of this is when I see two people taking with a certain look on their faces and then see small glances from both to me. I don’t know if what they were talking about was good or bad but I knew it was about me and it made me feel uneasy.

One time I overheard my parents talking about what my sister was getting for her birthday, but it was kind of mumbled so obviously I misheard. I went and told her what I thought I’d heard so she was super excited. Well her birthday ca,e and the gift I told her she was getting wasn’t there so she asked where it was was and my parents were like “ummmmm, what?” Anyways never assume.
