In Chapter 1, Scout, Jem, and Dill are fascinated by the Radley house. When you were a child, was there a neighbor, family member, or place that scared you? Describe that person/place as you remember them and think about how your experience parallels the children in the novel.

When I was little I went to a wedding at a place by my house. So I would act good my mom told me that the owner was the evil girl from 101 Dalmatians. I don’t remember much but I do know I acted very well.

When I was young, my neighbors house was always kind of eeri. This was because it was always so quiet and we rarely saw the people come out. Plus they owned like 20 cats. This is pretty similar to the way Dill, Jem, and Scout feel about the Radley’s place. If they were anything like me, I think they just want to know what is happening inside the house.

I have lived in the same house for as long as I can remember and I didn’t really have neighbors. That was until my brother moved into the neighboring house and he isn’t that scary.

There was this house a couple houses away from mine and my friend and I were always scared to pass it because it looked really beaten down but we knew someone lived there because we saw cars all the time come and go. Little did we know that the house was eventually busted because it turned out to be a meth lab.

When I was little, we lived in a house with a basement that was being remodeled. It was really dark & cold, & every time I went downstairs I was scared. One time there was a broomstick propped against one of the walls in a dark corner & I thought it was a person haha. Anyways, every time I went back upstairs I would run as fast as I could. Jem, Scout, & Dill did the same thing when they saw the Radley house.

I would always run fast up the stairs when I was leaving the basement at my grandmas house because it was dark and I was scared that a monster would catch me if I didn’t run fast.

When I was little I read a book and in the book a girl was killed inside an abandoned house and then later her friend was stuck in it while it was burning. So I would always subconsciously be afraid of the house that was in the book, thinking maybe I would find it somewhere and the same thing might happen to me.

As a kid I was scared of my Grandma’s basement after I turned the light off downstairs. So after I turned the lights off I would run up the stairs. Like the kids in To Kill a Mockingbird, they would run past the house.

On the backroad to get to my house there is this freaky boarded up house that always scared me whenever we drove past it or rode horses by it. It is really old and we always joke that it is haunted. My sister always used to make up stories about the house that frightened me.

I used to live next to an old creepy man. My mom told me never to walk up to his deck because it was so old and it would fall in. Just like the children in the story we where scared of this house for know obvious reason.

When I was little I was scared of my great grandmother’s house. It was small and had no lights so a night it looked scary and spooky. I thought my great grandpa’s ghost was also in this house and it scared me.

I remember the woods near my house always fascinated me. I always got a creepy feeling when I went in there by myself. One time I found a knife stuck into a random tree, which fed the creepy ness of the woods.

I used to be scared of my nana’s old basement. It was nothing but concrete and wood beams. It was really easy to get stuck. Looking back on it now, I don’t know why her basement was like that. Anywho, my older cousin locked me down there once with the lights off and let me tell you I screamed so loud. Anyways yah haha

There is a place in the mountains by black rock where I used to drive my four wheeler. I remember driving it down there and getting a weird vibe from it. When I tried to leave I ended up rolling my four wheeler over me. I’ve visited a few times since but every time I end up getting stuck there. The light always seems bright from the sky above even when my parents call me to say it’s dark out. It’s a weird place I prefer not to be around.

When I lived in Georgia we constantly moved to different neighborhoods and my next door neighbor had a house that was almost completely covered in vines and other weird plants. At first I was terrified that the house was haunted but then I met the man who lived there and he was actually really nice. He also used to give us a bunch of fresh vegetables from his garden because he was a gardener.

When I was a kid I would ride my bike past the neighbors house and I would go super fast because his dogs would run out onto the road and bark at me and chase me. He had a couple different dogs and I remember they would try to bite your legs as you rode past. This is similar to the story because they run fast past the house out of fear.

When I was little, in the old middle school, there was that hallway that connected the two sides of the gyms. That was the “haunted hallway”, that was pretty creepy and it was always dark because we couldn’t find the lights. The janitor room scared all the little kids because we thought there was ghost that lived in there.

I was scared of my own house at night. I’d wake up in the middle of the night to get some water, and I’d have to walk down a long narrow hallway to get the kitchen. You can’t see anything around the corner, and once I had a dream that I was standing at the back of the hallway and a crazy psycho with a chainsaw came around the corner. He was going to kill me and me family. So whenever I got up, I’d stand at the back forever in fear, then run really fast so I didn’t have look at it.

I was never in one place long enough to know about the people around me when I was young. I also never really interacted with people or went outside so the scariest thing was my bedroom at night.
