Permission Slipped

11/1/2018

Read this article about a tweet of a letter Daniel Radosh sent to his son's teacher, who required a permission slip to read Fahrenheit 451 (in 8th grade).  What do you think of his letter to the teacher?  What is the irony in requiring parental permission to read the book?  What does it demonstrate about our society?

It’s funny that they want to ban a book that is about banning books. This demonstrates that our society is soft and tender.

I thought that the letter was very ironic because the book he wants to read talks about freedom of information and the freedom to read books. This shows our society, in some ways, is similar to the society in Fahrenheit 451

I think it was really ironic. The irony isn that the book talks about how you can hardly read any books anymore because almost all the books are banned. This demonstrates how sensitive or how easily offended people in our society are.

I think it is a great letter that give some brilliant points. That the concept about the book is a big deal to society and that you have to have permission to read the book that has a realistic concept about what could happen. That our society doesn’t look how real this book could become and how we put things to the side that tell the truth because people don’t want to hear it.

They are sencering the book because it was challenge just like in Fahrenheit 451 they burned books. Our society is basically wearing a mask. Telling use one thing while doing another.
