Daily Literary Quote
“Christopher Columbus, as everyone knows, is honored by posterity because he was the last to discover America.” -James Joyce Journal Prompt Take a look at this article from The Oatmeal. What are some issues with the myth that Christopher Columbus "discovered" the Americas? Explain. Do you think Columbus should be honored with a holiday in the United States? Why or why not?

No I don’t think that Columbus should be celebrated because he didn’t really discover America and when he did come to America he was awful and treated the natives like dirt.

No because he wasn’t the one that actually discovered the new world. And he did not treat the natives very well.

One of the big issues with the myth is that they already know the earth was round and there was someone who already discovered it before he was even born. I don’t think he should be honored for the discovery because people had already discovered it.

Some issues are that the natives American were there more than a century earlier. I think so.... because even though others discovered it he was the first to tell anyone about it, therefore in a way discovered it.

One big issue with the myth that Christopher Columbus discovered America is that there were Indians in America first. I do not think Columbus should get a holiday because he was not the first to discover America and he told people he was the one who found that the earth was round.

The problem with Christopher Columbus discovering the Americas is that it’s not true. There is proof that it was Leif Ericsson that came across the Americas but it has been passed down in stories that it was Columbus. I don’t think he deserves a day to be recognized by his “discovering” but by his start of a new era.

Christopher Columbus didn’t discover the Americas because people were already living there when he arrived. It should be honored because it was a big discovery for the European people at the time but it still has a bad history behind it. But so does most of the good things in our history.

Columbus definitely didn’t discover America, he might’ve thought so but he is incorrect. He just showed up and claimed land that was already owned and being used by other people. He has no right to having a holiday named after him. Even worse, we don't get the holiday off.

I do not think we should celebrate Columbus Day, because, let me tell ya, Mr. Christopher Columbus didn't do anything exceptionally great. He didn’t discover that the earth was round, and he didn’t discover the America’s. And not to mention his cruelty and prejudice towards other human beings.

He didn’t discover the America’s but Leif Erickson did centuries before him and Zheng He was documented in China to have found the Americas long before Columbus. I think we shouldn’t celebrate Columbus Day because as children we are taught that Columbus is a really good guy when really he isn’t.

No I don’t think Columbus discovered the new world, he made his opinion about it and people listened to him, how do you know if people only listened to him cause he had money. Nobody actually knows, he treated the natives unkindly when he should have gave them respect. Just because they weren’t like him doesn’t mean you need to bring them down to make yourself happy.

I don’t think Columbus was the one who actually discovered America. Something shouldn’t be considered “discovered” if many others already knew about it, or in this case, already lived there. I don’t think Columbus deserves his own federal holiday. It celebrates all of the bad things he did to the natives.
