Take a look at this article from The Oatmeal. What are some issues with the myth that Christopher Columbus "discovered" the Americas? Explain. Do you think Columbus should be honored with a holiday in the United States? Why or why not?

Columbus did not discover the Americas he just took over them. He put the people living there into slavery. He should not have a holiday because he wasn't kind to the indigenous people. He didn't discover anything he just forced his ways on everyone living there.

If you can't look at history in the time that it took place, you shouldn't be trying to figure out what you think happened. You shouldn't judge history if you can't see from their point of view. If you can't see the differences from now and then you are allowing ignorance. I think that he should be honored. For his time he made a huge discovery. He wasn't going to find America he was trying to find an easier route to get to India. But he did and you can't change that by changing the name of the holiday or rewriting history.

I feel like its a pretty important day of the year when America was found. Like 4th of July for our independence its pretty important when our country was found.

I don't think that Columbus day should be celebrated because there was Native Americans on the land before he even got there. The Natives had already discovered it, Columbus just made it a big deal.

The Vikings were the one to discover it, The Native Americans were also already established there. Columbus should not be celebrated for discovering America but rather discovering the passage to it.

One of the issues is that it was discovered already long before Columbus discovered it. No I do not think he should have a holiday because we already have a lot and also he did not truly discover the America´s first.

If Columbus "discovered" America last he didn't actually discover it he walked in and called it his. All he was after is money. He also didn't even set foot in what is now America. He does not deserve to have a american holiday.

I don't think that there are a lot of people that actually honor Columbus day. I never remember it unless someone brings it up. I don't think that we should honor it anyway though because he wasn't a very good person. He wasn't the first to discover America, but he was the last.
