Daily Literary Quote
“Christopher Columbus, as everyone knows, is honored by posterity because he was the last to discover America.”
                                                                                                         -James Joyce

Journal Prompt
Take a look at this article from The Oatmeal.  What are some issues with the myth that Christopher Columbus "discovered" the Americas?  Explain.  Do you think Columbus should be honored with a holiday in the United States?  Why or why not?

I think he should not be the one to celebrate our holiday because I believe that he definitely wasn’t the first person to come or discovered the United States

I think Christopher Columbus would be proud if he knew how we celebrated. The stories that he was a nice guy are all not true and I think he would rather the elementary version of the story be told and have a holiday to himself.

I don’t think we should have a holiday for him due to him not discovering the new but I do think we should give him some credit for pushing to moving to the new land.

So Columbus is a meany and we all should know that. He shouldn’t get a holiday, instead the holiday should be renamed native peoples day where we celebrate and mourn the old cultures that influence the new

Christopher Columbus wasn’t the first person to discover America. Natives were here way before Columbus came upon it. I personally don’t think there should be a holiday in his name for “being the first to discover America.”

I don’t think he should have a whole holiday, but he was one of them men that lead the expedition to America. He definitely doesn’t deserve all the credit and a holiday to himself.

I dont think Columbus should be celebrated like he is because he came to the Amercas and enslaved and killed natives. It's a pointless holiday and by now the meaning of it has been lost anyway.

The flaws of Columbus Day is to celebrate Christopher Columbus because he sailed to the New World and had found it. He faced some challenges by running into Indians and different types of diseases. So therefore he should be celebrated for finding the New World where everyone could go and celebrate him.

Christopher didn't "discover" America. There were already indigenous people living here. I think he should be know for traveling here and starting a new age society but not honored with his own holiday. He was cruel and came for the gold to please the queen.

He wasn’t the first person to the United States, technically he never landed in the USA, and so I don’t believe he should have his own holiday, sure it’s an important moment in history but not important enough to have a holiday for it

I think that we should absolutely not honor him, he didn't do anything. He descoverd somthing that was already being inhabited. If anything we should honor the thousands of native Americans that were murdered because of him.

Christopher Columbus was not the first to discover America for the Vikings were first in their discovery of it years before so he was not the first, also the native Americans who lived there knew about it from a time we aren’t sure of yet before that. So he can’t discover something that is already discovered. Yet it is not a myth that he found another continent that Europe was unaware of. Yes it should be a honored holiday because he was the first to entice countries to settle in America, that led to us having the country that we have today.

I believe columbus should be celebrated. The flaw with the myth is columbus discovered what had already been inhabited and he wanted the land purely for the gold and better trade routes.

Columbus defiantly wasn't the first to discover America so we should not have a holiday celabrating it.

There are many reasons in this article that say why Colombo was awful. I would have to get more opinions but I believe he and his holiday is over rated. He did not discover the America’s because there where already people living there. “He discovered the Americas like the meteor discovered the dinosaurs.”

He didn’t even fully discover the new world there was already life here. He just wanted the money and to be known for a “discovery” cause his life wasn’t doing so well. I feel like they should change the name to something involved with native Americans since they were here and was treated really bad by Columbus.

I don't think columbus should have a holiday because he did not discover the new world and was not a very nice guy but was super greedy. He should have some credit for wanting to and moving to the new world, but not much.

reason why it needs to be a national Halliday.

Columbus should not be honored by a holiday. He was originally set to find another area of the world and happened to run across America. While he did find this land in the process, Columbus did awful things to the natives and all the people he came across.

History from that period has a lot of holes and inconsistencies, sometimes villains are championed while others are forgotten. Columbus is just an example of a gold-seeking villain from that period who somehow ended up being championed as a hero-discoverer.

I feel like he shouldn’t be as celebrated as he is. He gets more credit than is deserved as he wasn’t the first to discover the Americas. He was just the first from his world. He brought two worlds together
