Weekly Literary Quote
Every man is surrounded by a neighborhood of voluntary spies. -Jane Austen Journal Prompt In 1984, there is no boundary between one's work and one's "personal" life. In the age of social media, colleges and employers are conducting online "background checks" of potential and current students/employees with increasing fequency, and the line between our private and "professional" lives is becoming ever thinner. Also, conducting work/school from home in our current situation has made that distinction virtually nonexistent. How much right do you think an employer, school, or other organization should have to investigate your past or personal life? Why? Explain.

I think if you’re going to work in a government based job they have the right to know your background. The reason is because you never know if you’re going to hire a criminal or not and if someone has a really bad drug problem and they apply to work at a pharmacy then you would want to know since the drugs or medication might go missing. By knowing someone’s background then you know if they will be fit for the job.

I agree that they should be able to search work related things. It is important to know who is working for you.

I don’t think that they should be able to check your social media or anything other then your federal records. If you are getting hired for a job they should not be allowed to look all the way into your personal life. They should be able to do drug test and check crimson records because that’s the only think that should matter to a company. Someone should not be able to look on social media and look at your personal opinions because if they are different form the person that is hiring they could choose to hired you.

Schools should get access to your academic redonda and in my opinion that is it, because that should be the only thing taken into account when it comes to schooling. Your personal life should be left out of searches. The only things that should be looked at are the things that would effect how efficiently you would work or how well you fit the role. They should be able to drug test and perform other criminal searches, but why do they need access to your social media.

I think that your job whether it be school or an actual paying job should be able to have access to your past. I think this because a lot of people relapse and get back into trouble. Although this is not always true it seems to be more common than not. Social media can have a big role in finding out if a person is lying about who they try to say they are in an interview.

i think that any of the above should be able to know as much as possible about people. they need to know who they have working for them or attending their school. it’s really easy for people to put up fronts and hide who they really are. some people can hide that they are bad people but with background checks it’s easy to uncover that front. background checks help employers and schools figure out who people really are.

I think that all of those have every right to investigate in the past. An employer or a school needs to know if they are going to hire or take in a person that is good, if they have a bad past they could be dangerous which means that if they get hired or let in somewhere, it puts everyone else in danger and all falls back on the main person in charge. Yes people can change but its important to know about the past.

I believe that an employer or school should have all right to run a background check on a potential employee. Schools may not conduct background checks but the should be able to monitor social media as well as employers should. I believe this because as a student or a employee you represent your school community employer or company you work for. If you don't represent them in a positive matter it could leave the orginization with a bad reputation.

I think an employer or anyone in charge, should have the right to check anyone they hires background. Monitoring social media is a way people do it today. Schools don’t usually do a background check but like I said, social media is way they check people today and they have the right to do when you are under their care for a certain number of hours a week.

I don’t think that they should be able to look at your personal information unless it is your criminal history and your drivers license information. What I do in my personal life is no one business besides my own. If you have a high level government job I would agree that it is ok for them to go through your online life to make sure that you are safe to work in that job.

I believe that background checks should be done on everyone for any criminal activate. All employers should have the right to know if they are inviting in a potentially dangerous person. Do however believe that they don't need to check everything that they do look at.

I feel like work/school should be able to look up things you've done in the past to a certain extent. If they are going to look up you past it should only be the past that deals with what the person may have gotten in trouble for. I also think that that certain extent should follow the first problem so say if someone got a battery charge if they have no past charges of that it should go into a first offense kind of thing because all kinds of people do stupid things sometimes so if they got caught for battery and had other criminal charges such as stealing it wouldn't be fair to use that against them unless they committed battery while stealing and then committed battery again.

I believe that if someone is employing you, they should have all the right to do a background check. This is said for many reasons. They will not want someone who is a criminal working for them or a bad reputation. If you do not feel safe having a background check then what are you hiding from your employer.

I believe that whoever is hiring should have the right to any public information. They should know what kind of person will be working at their business. This should include a criminal background check. People just need to realize that when they put something on social media (Facebook, Instagram etc) that it then becomes public information. If you do not want your personal information out then don't put it on the web.

I think that they have the right to do a background check on you. The job you apply for should know about you before they hire you just to make sure you are cut out for the job for example if you were applying to work at a school but you are a pedo then the school should do a background check on you for it.

I think a school or employer has every right to look into someones information online. This helps them to see if they're a good candidate for said position. Everything that is online about a person is there because they put it there. People need to watch what they put online if they don't want this to happen.
