Daily Literary Quote
“Christopher Columbus, as everyone knows, is honored by posterity because he was the last to discover America.” -James Joyce Journal Prompt Take a look at this article from The Oatmeal. What are some issues with the myth that Christopher Columbus "discovered" the Americas? Explain. Do you think Columbus should be honored with a holiday in the United States? Why or why not?

Columbus did discover America but he made it possible for us to come over here. I think it should just because he made it possible for us to come here and help mapping it.

Technically, people before the Vikings discovered it.

I agree that he made it possibly for people to come over and settle this land which is very important.

I kinda agree that maybe he shouldn’t have a holiday because he did a lot of bad things to the natives that helped the settlers survive.

A issue sue is that Columbus wasn’t the first one to explore the America’s Leif Eriksson did. A Viking traveling for places to conquer. He’s not famous because he didn’t write a journal about it. I think it should be Eriksson day.

I agree that it should be called Erikson day, and that even though he didn’t write a journal he should still be recognized.

Even though Columbus didn’t prove the Earth was round, he still found “The new world” and made it possible for us to be here today. I believe it should be honored in the United States as a holiday.

No I don’t think that Christopher Columbus should have a holiday. According to the article the main things that we remember him by are not entirely true. For example he didn’t discover the “New World” someone 500 years before he sailed had already discovered it.

I don’t think he should have a holiday to himself. Props to him for starting a new era of trade and a new future in the Americas, but he didn’t discover it and his main focus was on the gold not the land itself.

I think that we shouldn’t, Columbus end up killing 3-5 million people by bringing over a disease. He only cared about the money he would get for finding the land. I think it was a mistake on making this day a celebration.

Columbus did not discover the America’s as Leif Erickson had already discovered it many years prior. Columbus slaughtered and committed atrocities towards the people. I don’t think he deserves a holiday. I think he should have been shunted and cast out of our history books but that will never happen.

He didn’t descover it because someone else did five hundred years ago someone did and people lived there. I don’t think we should honor Columbus dat. All he did was collect a lot of gold and murdered millions of people.

Columbus did not discover America plain and simple. What he discovered however was there was gold in America but he wasn’t the first to discover the land. Also they knew the Earth wasn’t flat. Columbus isn’t even the hero in this story. I don’t believe he should have his own government holiday, because he isn’t deserving of it.

Some of the issues with the myth that Christopher Columbus discovered America was the slave trade and he way he treated these people to get gold. Though people say he’s a bad person and shouldn’t be celebrated I believe no he didn’t need to do those bad things and no he shouldn’t be celebrated because he never actually discovered America someone else did, Lief Erickson should be celebrated.

Although Christopher Columbus did not discover the America’s he did pave a path for people to come over and create the country we know today. Leif Erickson discovered the America’s but the natives were there long before any other man. I’m not sure if he should have a holiday he did cut the hand off of non paying natives but he also paved the way for this county.

I knew Columbus did some messed up stuff (because the past was a different country), but I didn’t know how messed up. I don’t believe that he should deserve his own holiday. However, he should still not be forgotten less history is to repeat. Columbus and his men I like to compare to alqida or the Nazis, they did horrendous things and shouldn’t be forgotten but they don’t deserve a holiday. Why not turn Columbus Day into a day celebrating the Natives, the people WAY before him, or the Vikings (who did both bad things and yet found America before Columbus).

He wasn’t the only one that knew the earth was flat. He wasn’t the first to discover America but he claimed to be. I think whoever discovered it should be the main person of the holiday but he should be recognized for other things he did.
