Weekly Literary Quote
“The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.” -George Orwell, 1984 Journal Prompt Draw some parallels between the future that Orwell predicted when he wrote the book in 1948 and the society that has come to pass today. What are some warnings we can take from the book in regards to technology or politics? Do you think Orwell would be impressed with the world today? Why or why not?

I do not think Orwell would be impressed with the world today. He would see how we have changed especially. He would see that we have lost our ways in education. Also how we have guided away from our futures.

I agree and disagree, I think he would be impressed by some of the technology we have today. I also think he would be discouraged by some of the things we have lost our way on.

I agree and disagree. He would be impressed but also worried. With how our technology is developing so fast we will rely on it more and more to the point that is all we will instead of our ownselves.

I somewhat agree. He wouldn’t be impressed only because our technology isn’t as advanced.

I don’t see any parallels between his world and ours. Some warnings we can take are that someday technology may take over our lives and our privacy. Another is that if we let the government take full control someday we may be living in a sense of distopia. I think he would be because of the technological advances.

I don’t see very many parallels but with how our society is so technology based there is a threat that it will take over to the extent that our entire society will be ran purely on tech. We are already very dependent on how much we use technology services from having it as our main way of communication and how much personal information can be found on the internet. I feel that Orwell would see how dependent we all are on our newest technologies and the internet.

I agree Ryder! Technology is a huge part of our world now and Orwell would see it and be impressed but also worried about our future and our entire society being revolved around tech.

I don’t see many parallels with our society and his, but we have grown to be a very technology based world. Which isn’t always a bad thing but is never a good thing. We have grown to be so dependent on all the technology around us. We have gained a lot knowledge through it all too and I think he would realize that.

I don’t see really any parallels between their world and ours. I do see similarities in the fact we are very reliant on technology in today’s world. I also see it in that technology can cause issues sometimes. When people get to much technology power they can get carried away and create things of harm to our world.

The only thing I see similar is the fact that we do rely on technology. This technology can be good and bad. Good because it is handy to have all the stuff we want to know right in our phone. Bad because we may rely on it too much. I also feel that this technology has taken away from communication between people. And this is breaking things down.

There are very few parallels between his book and our world today. The only one I could think of is that technology will take over or everyday life and personal lives. Even though we could use it for good. There are some people that can’t.

Orwell would not be impressed with how our world is now. A parallel i think are similar is how the technology is taking over the world. We have so many devices we use in our everyday lives and I think it will keep developing over time and we will rely it more and more.

For parallels, we definitely have less privacy than we used to. I think he would be a mix of both impressed, and disappoited. He would see how far we have come with technology, but he would also see the other side of the coin, and how many people have gotten to the point that if you don't agree with them, then you aren't correct. People now don't understand how to set aside differences, and work together.

one parallel is our world now runs on technology. orwells world had technology that was much more advanced. i feel like soon enough our world could potentially start relying on technology for literally everything. orwell would be very impressed with how we use technology. there’s a lot of other parallels but this was the one that caught my eye most.

In Orwell's book 1984 the telescreen is everywhere and Big Brother is watching you. No one ever knows if or when and that there are hidden microphones that can listen at anytime. In today's society we have cell phones, t.vs, and computers, as well as other technology. Our government can tap into any device and listen or look at anything at anytime they want, his book warns us to not let technology take control our lives and the government shouldn't have total control. I believe Orwell would be impressed of the work and education because these days kids aren't taught to spy and turn their parents in to the government.

I don't see any parallels other than that technology has taken over our privacy. Even this isn't completely true but some what is true. Orwell gives us warnings about technology taking over our lives and privacy. This isn't true at least right now. I think Orwell would be impressed with today's world because of how far technology has came.
