Daily Literary Quote
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view … until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” -Atticus Finch, To Kill a Mockingbird Journal Prompt Explain the quote above. Discuss a time when you heard multiple versions of the same event that contradicted one another (or someone else's recollection of an event was different than your own). Why did they differ? How do we determine "truth" in such occasions?

The quote explains that we don’t really know another person until we experience events that have changed them. You never really know a person until you walk a mile in their shoes so to speak. The book I’m reading right now is Ender’s Shadow and it’s the exact same plot from Ender’s Game but this time the story is told through the eyes of Bean and his experiences that shaped him for better and worse.

We really don’t know another persons full story. We should not always be so quick to jump to conclusions because they could look fine on the outside but be completely hurt on the inside.

I feel like people are quick to judge one another until they have had similar, if not the same, experiences. Sometimes all it takes is just a minute to be able to understand someone more clearly by looking at things their way.

Don’t judge someone so quick. There is conflict in day to day life. I heard a story that is not mine to tell, there were two people involved. Each told their side of the story. They were both right in their own way because they say it from their perspective. So in situations there can be truth on both sides no matter what.

The quote means that people will never know what happened unless you were the person telling the story.

Every person sees things from a different point of view. Until you look at things their way, you can’t really judge them. Sometimes we hear different versions of the same story because, as it gets passed along, it gets twisted to fit the persons description and how they view it. We can determine whether it is true or not by comparing the other versions and seeing which one is closest to the original.

I agree that that’s probably the best way to find the truth in these types of situations

Do you think that sometimes even when we compare the different version she of the story the actual truth still isn’t found out?

The way stories get twisted really does depend on what they believe, kind of like how rumors are passed through people.

That is very true. Sometimes what is being spread is just a made up rumor. Instead of keeping it going people should go to the person it may be about and ask them about it. Otherwise that person could get very hurt.

In order to understand someone else’s point of view on something you have to look at it the same way as they do. I can’t think of a time where I heard multiple versions of a story

The quote means that you can’t really understand a person/why they would do something until you consider things from their perspective. In situations were people’s story on the same event differs, you just have to look at the overlapping facts in their stories, and you can at least get the gist of what really happened.

The quote is saying that we all have different perspectives and you can’t really understand someone until you’re in their situation. I can think of lots of situations like this. Usually they are because people remember things differently than I do. The perspectives usually differ because there were many things going on and different things seemed more memorable to me than the other person. I don’t think that there is a way to determine the truth because no one really knows what actually went on.

The quote basically means in order to understand a person, you have to hear their side of the story and know that what they experience in life can be different from your own. I don’t remember a time where I heard multiple variations of the same story, but it does occur when people spread rumors. I think they differ because people like to exaggerate events to enhance reactions from people and because there is a certain type of power with it. How we determine truth is complicated because people will still lie for their own benefit. To get the truth, people have to live up and confess if they lied.

I can think of multiple times this has happened although I can’t recall the exact events that occurred. Sometimes the truth can never be determined but it can be helpful if there are more people involved to help determine what happened.

I once pulled the e brake in my geo and drifted a corner going maybe 35 mph a person who saw it called the cops and somehow thought I was going 65 mph on two wheels. That’d be impressive but kind of impossible in that car. I think the two stories differ because she was trying to screw me over. To determine the truth in this situation we have to go to court.

You never understand why someone does what they do until you learn who they are. This is like when me and my group of friends start to argue about the Skyrim civil war which happens a lot about which side we’re on. They differ because one side want order and control the other wants to have freedom and control them self’s. There isn’t a truth until you experience both sides of the argument.

You can’t really know a person until you’ve seen the world from their point of view. Ive heard rumors spread about people that turned out to be the furthest thing gonna from the truth when I asked them about it. The only way to know for sure is to ask the person in question.

A lot of people make judgements without understanding circumstance. We as compassionate people should understand that everything isn’t black and white. We can’t judge a person based on only our perception of the action, we need to look at the situation from all points of view before we decide to pass judgement on the situation. I can’t think of a specific example right now but I know there have been many circumstances in which the truth was not clear due to people twisting the truth and passing judgement before understanding a situation. It makes it extremely hard to make your own judgements when you can’t figure out the truth of a situation. The best way to find the truth is to go straight to the sources of the situation and listen to all sides of the story. From there we can decide what lines up and makes sense and what is a lie.

The quote is saying that you don’t know how the person feels until you become him or her in their life. I heard people have issues with one other not understand what the other person feels from him point of view. To determine the truth about some body, we have to look the fact and evidence about the person and the problem.

Everyone’s point of view or judgment is different than the next guys’ so until you hear everything they have to say and until they explain there mind to you, you can’t understand their point of view. This is like the common he said she said business that happens in high school, you hear one thing than another thing about the same person. Some will jump straight to conclusion and believe their right when another will find out that certain person’s point of views.

The quote just says that everyone has a different story about the same event. I think any time something happens between people everyone involved has a different story. Stories differ between people telling them because they want to look like the victim or hero or sometimes our brains change stories because that's actually how we remember it. There's usually so,e truth to both stories and you have to decide what's true based on what's similar in both and what the person telling the story is like.
