Daily Literary Quote
"When power leads man toward arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses."
                                                                                                                                                                               - John F. Kennedy

Journal Prompt
What are some current examples of corruption in a position of power (government, church, law enforcement, etc.) you recall from the news, internet, etc.?  Do you think corrupt people seek power or power corrupts?  Explain.

The president and everyone in the whitehouse. I think it’s both ways. People seek power but power corrupts people even more.

Some recent events of corruption would be the police brutality against non Caucasian American citizens. I think it can go either way, it just depends on the person’s situation and what their state of mind is at that point of power. Corruption isn’t limited to power but it’s a leading factor.

I think power has a lot to do with corruption. You see people change according to how much power they get all the time.

I feel that if you’re truly a good person power will not corrupt you but it will move you to make positive change. Corruption runs in almost every group of society you see a lot of examples within the workings of government, the news adds to the corruption by fueling rumors and false information at times. I can’t think of any specific examples but if you turn on the television and watch the news you’ll see many examples of corruption.

A lot of politics in office are corrupt. I believe power corrupts as one feels that they can get away with more corrupt actions and they have to th power to change situations in their favor.

Most people look at a situation and how it will benefit them most. They need to look at the bigger picture.

In my opinion I feel like police officers abuse their power and are very corrupt because they do whatever they want and get away with everything. For example they murder innocent people and get away with it just because they claim that the victim looked suspicious.

This is a very good example, I also think that select officers abuse their power. I think that not every officer is corrupt but there are definitely some that are.

The Christian churches used to be very corrupt. They would write their bible in a Latin and refused to teach anyone the language so they could continue to manipulate people. They could make just about anyone do jus about anything out of fear that if they didn’t they would go to hell. Most people seek power of some kind and it can corrupt people. Most people want more power once they get the taste of a little.

Maybe I’m exaggerating but there might still be instances today where the Christian church manipulate people to try and control governmental decisions, usually by guilting other people.

Simmer cops are corrupt by taking bribes to turn a blind eye to gangs. Corrupt people seek power because many people in power are now corrupt.

One could argue that cops can be some of the most corrupt people. Especially in situations such as unarmed African American shootings and using unnecessary force to take down innocent African Americans.

We have many politicians and leaders in society that are concerned with themselves and not with the well being of others. Our celebrities don’t think about the everyday people when they put out nearly impossible standards, the people on Wall Street are out to make a dollar, not to make people happy. I think people seek power and that corrupts people because they choose to get it any way they can.

One current corruption in government that comes to my mind is the Supreme Court judge, Kavanaugh. I think that corrupt people seek power because it makes them feel in charge. A lot of people were against Kavanaugh being appointed judge and by stating their opinion they could feel more in charge.

Former governor Robert Bentley resigned after being exposed for using state funds to hid an affair that he had with a staff member. I think that power corrupts most people. Because having a lot of power can make you feel invincible.

The Supreme Court justice Cavanaugh, is a good example because Trump put him in so that he could have some of that power. Think think about it both ways if you are corrupt all you want is more power and if you get into power you get power hungry and just want more power and that’s why it corrupts you

There is evidence that suggests that Hillary Clinton sent classified e-mails. I would also say social media giants are corrupt and that the media is corrupt. It goes both ways. People who want power gain it through corruption and once they hold power they sustain it through corruption as well.

Many people also tend to turn a blind eye on such injustice so that they can attain selfish goals. It was astounding to me that no one seemed to bring up the email situation with Hillary even as they were digging up all the dirt on Trump.

When someone is in a position of power it can go to their head and often corrupt their values. I think a good person can become corrupt when they are handed a position of high power because they seek the highest of power
