My brother and I would spend hours taking quizzes on YouTube determining what dragon we would be or which mystical house we would live in. Pick red, yellow, green, or blue. If you picked red, you’re a golden retriever. If you picked yellow, you’re a chameleon. If you picked green, you’re a giraffe. If you picked blue, you’re a hairless cat. How can a color or preferred destination decide what kind of animal we are or which god is your parent? When we take these quizzes, we tend to adapt to what it tells us we are. The adjectives we take to heart. When I didn’t like the thing I wanted, I would change my answers to get the one I wanted. It is the same thing with zodiac signs. Zodiacs are described vaguely and with adjectives that we could form ourselves to. Do you believe there is some sort of truths to these quizzes or zodiac symbols? Do you think there is an accurate way to say “who we are” or “what we like”? Identity is something that is questioned. What gives us our identity? Can it change?

I feel like there might be some truth to the personality quizzes and stuff like that, because there so many people in the world and pattern are going to appear and with those pattern one who is smart enough and has the right tools could potentially figure out someone like a "favorite color" that resignate with those type of people or feeling. Many of us also assign color to many different things; like death being black and dark and holiness being white and bright, so saying that a group of people assign color a certain way isn't a huge stretch. Now about the ones on YouTube and such about your god, I personally doubt them because of how you find what you are; just adding the numbers of what you picked and giving a range, so they are probably for just entertainment purposes. I also think that there will almost never be a perfectly accurate way to exactly who you are, only you can decide that, but your identity I do believe can change. Many people around the world have breakdowns if they feel like they have lost themselves which can lead to the greater or the worse depending how they recover and reshape themselves if necessary.

I agree that many quizzes and things on YouTube are primarily for entertainment. It is hard for children to understand the difference between studied results and ones just for fun. Do some kids try to mold themselves into what some websites say because they feel they should be that way?

I agree that tests online are often not trustworthy. When you are given a range of numbers that can match closely with other people besides yourself, it's not a great set of data to go off of. The quiz may also be missing questions that could be crucial to defining your personality.

I agree with you and also believe that some sources aren’t realistic and don’t understand one’s personality.

I agree with you, everyone is different and one quiz can't define every person exactly so they give a rough estimate of your personality which can make or break a person. Not every person is going to have all the same traits or characteristics. Everyone is different and has different interests or hobbies and that is what defines them not a silly little quiz that is found on the internet.

I used to do tons of these in middle school, I believe that most of the quizzes were truthful or made sense to my personality and zodiac sign. There was a few I have done that didn’t makes sense to me about my personality or zodiac sign so I don’t believe that it it most definitely accurate.

I think personality quizzes are better at determining what fits you best or who you are because it is sometimes possible to infer something from another in this situation. For example, these quizzes assume that most people who eat healthy, take time journaling, and spend their free time doing yoga are people who are down-to-earth and like to connect with themselves, therefore maybe they would prefer a bright, old-time cottage in the woods over a gothic style manor. This isn't always true, but more often than not, it is fairly accurate. Zodiac signs, however, do not make sense to me. I don't think a person's personality traits, likes and dislikes, and who they get along with can be based off of when they were born. I'm a Cancer, but every other person I've met with that same sign is very different from me. But it is interesting because many of the descriptions of cancer (weaknesses, strengths, and what they seek emotionally) is actually very accurate to me. So maybe zodiac signs are true for some people, just not most?

I like how you mentioned that some traits for a person are easier to define than others. I would agree because sometimes the details are smaller and less complicated, like which ice cream matches certain aspects of yours. In this way you can focus on a few details instead of trying to sum someone up as a person.

I agree with what you are saying, I feel like some traits will match and so things will start to make sense but then there is other traits that you do not have that will start to confuse you when it comes to zodiac signs. But I also feel people will change and try to adapt to those traits so they can say that they believe in zodiac signs.

I don't necessarily feel one way or the other about zodiac signs. I think that some things aren't a coincidence, so it's possible that events at the time of your birth could affect you as a person. It's also possible that the impact is too small to measure and maybe it's not worth your time to study them so intensely. Personality is also developed through experiences that people have throughout their lives and how they react to them. However, there are lots of personality tests out there such as Meyer-Briggs or the Hogwarts Sorting Hat.

I agree that the Meyer-Briggs is a resourceful test for people who actually want to find out useful information. While the others, like Buzzfeed, are just there for fun and games.

I personally feel that when it comes to personality test most of the things that are said about us are not true but somethings may be. People tend to fill out the little quiz hoping for what they want to be and not what they actually are. They may say or answer a question that isn't the correct answer but they are going to put it because that is the answer they want, maybe to make them sound better than they really are. I feel that these quizzes could somewhat control people because they want to "fit in" so one might do what the quiz says to change to something that they really aren't. On the other side one of these quizzes could change someone for the better. So I feel that these quizzes and that zodiac signs could be both a bad and good thing to know about.

That is a really good point. These tests can never be perfectly accurate impartial judges because the limitations of the test and the intention of the test taker. People will skew results in an attempt to see what they want to see, and ignore the inaccurate information.

I agree that people fill in certain answers so they can look better to other people based on the results or answers. I know in middle school, I sometimes would answer questions with things that I thought made me look a little bit cooler or more interesting because I wanted people to think I had a cool rest of the quiz.

There might be some truth to these quizzes only because we like to find our similarities within something or someone. Someone created the questions, created the content, and had us all fall for it. I used to take these quizzes to find connections to other people who may have gotten the same thing. Or sometimes this would bring out new things I could take interest in if it told me one way or another. I do agree with the disappointment I would get when I didn't get the thing, place, or person I wanted, but it was sure fun to discover new things. With things like this though, I had to be careful. I would start to feel down when I didn't match with what my zodiac said or what they thought my personality would be like, and it could have become an obsession to "fit the mold," but it made me realize I was just fine without fitting in to what it said I should be. Yes the quizzes can be a gateway for other feelings but they were sure fun when I was a kid. I think as I have grown this is an example of how we all can change and grow, but I think deep down our morals of who we want to be is our identity but at the end of the day only we can change it.

That is some really interesting lines of thought! I love your introspection on the result of these categories and how they can result in the opposite effect. Instead of telling someone more about themselves it causes them to change to fit the description. I believe this can happen both intentionally and subconsciously. I mean even if we don't think it does the way people categorize us can implant an idea about ourselves that we otherwise might not have had.

I personally do find merit in these quizzes, just not in the way the creator intended. I think the way people answer these quizzes and feel about them says so much more about their character than the results. People are constantly trying to find something to relate to, it's easier to be part of something, to find a quick answer to who you are. It's self actualization without any of the very difficult work. The answers in themselves are meaningless, we can't tell what kind of animal someone is because it is impossible in our statue of limitations for someone to turn into an animal. Despite this humans like order, we recognize patterns where they do not in any way exist. We categorize people into star signs because it is less chaotic and takes less brain power. Instead of saying "I have no way to identify why Cathy is a raging piece of trash" we can say "Ugh it's cause Cathy is a Libra". Or of course Cathy is a snake, they are both cold blooded and are incapable of feeling love. (Cathy is not a real person, choose kindness) We make these tests the same reason we identify a chip looking like Taylor Swift, or a cloud like a duck - the world is easier when we view chaos as patterns. There is no problem with that. Also it's just fun.

I think that these quizzes are only placing random or similar traits into a stereotype to appeal to people. I also think that people are eager for other’s praise and validation even if it be from a silly quiz. We are shaped by our own experiences and life events so I think that these quizzes can be fun and helpful in understanding not only a little more about yourself but also about others.
