Random Facts (Rachel)

Most people I know usually have some super random fact that most the time isn't even that useful but they know it. What's a random fact that you know?

A random fact that I have is that an ostriches eye is bigger than it's brain. I think I learned this one day in art class. I'm not sure what thetopic of conversation was but I remember one of my friends bringing that up. I probably won't ever use this information for anything, but for some reason it's just living rent free in my head.

A random fact I know is that when people are dreaming, our muscles become partially paralyzed so we do not physically act out what is happening in the dreams. It is also connected to why there are sleepwalkers, as their part of the brain does not temporarily stun the muscles. This information was acquired when I was curious about sleepwalkers and ended up in a rabbit hole. I also would not find this information to be useful for really anyone.

When I was about 7-9 years old I found out about this temporarly paralizement while sleeping. My cousins also liked to show me creepy and demonic characters that they watched animations of off of YouTube. Because of this, I was terrified that I would wake up to a demon at the foot of my bed and that I wouldn't be able to move. I then developed an actual fear to fall asleep. It was so awful. I put a lamp that would light up my whole room and tried my best to stay awake each night. However, my sisters hated this light so it only lasted in my room for about three months. While this information could be useful to better understand what the body does when it sleeps, it defiantly was not helpful for my 7 year old self.

A random fact that I know is that octopuses have three hearts and blue blood. Octopuses have three hearts because their blue blood is copper based so it is less efficient at transporting oxygen. The blood is therefore blue due to the copper in the blood.

I would probably have no use for this information especially since I live here.

An additional fact that I've found out relating to octopuses hearts is that one serves a different function. Two hearts will pump blood into the octopus's gills while the other heart pumps blood throughout the rest of the body. Also, the third heart actually stops pumping blood when the octopus swims. Lastly, when stressed, octopuses can sometimes change the rhythm of their hearts.

It is wild to think that any animal has more than one heart. I did not know the purpose behind the hearts, nor much about the excesse amount of copper they have.

Speaking of blue blood, don't horseshoe crabs have it too? I remember learning that their blood is used to make sure medicine is sterilized since their blood clots when a bacteria is present.

When I was in 8th and 9th grade, I had a particular interest for medieval torture mechanisms. One of the most famous methods that I studied what the Bronze Bull. This was a hollow bronze bull structure that the victims would be trapped inside. A fire would then be lit underneath it, slowly burning them to death. The bull was designed with pipes so that when the victims would scream, the sound would come out to the audience as bull cries. The cool fact that I have found from this was that the inventor was actually executed in it. He was told to go inside to demonstrate the mechanics, he was then sealed inside and roasted to death. A true ironic way to pass, with his invention that would brutally take the lives of many also became the reaper of his own demise. However, its important to note that this story is more legend and has not been completely proven yet.

Though I know of a few medieval torture mechanisms, but it seems crazy to think that the inventor may of gotten killed in his own creation. I would save that ironic story to engineers or something rather than a creator of a medieval torture device.

When it comes to random facts, I know lots of bits both in and out of this world. For example, oxygen can be made on Mars from atmospheric gases, and water is present at the Martian poles. Here on Earth, I know a lot too. Maybe not about Earth itself, but I know a lot about computers, airplanes, politics, and so much more that I can’t think of right now. The point is, I know a lot, but the more I learn, the more I realize I know nothing.
