New Holidays

3/10/2025

If you could invent a holiday what would it be and why? There have been numerous times that I thought it would be fun to have a new crazy holiday,  and I wanted to see what other holidays people would come up with.

If I could found a holiday, it would be a global No Electricity Day (within reason). I just want to see all of the lights turned off and people enjoying camping, playing DnD by candlelight, telling scary ghost stories, and celebrating together in person. There would be a bunch of fire-roasted food, fruits and vegetables, and frozen delicacies. There would be no Internet use at all that day, which could cause a significant decrease in the revenue of harmful industries. This will also promote more kindness and fun in daily life as people see how fun and crazy it can be to connect with your family and friends without electricity for a day every once in a while.

That's a really neat idea! A lot of countries already do this monthly to every several months as a save on electricity for the planet! and people seem to really enjoy it. I always enjoyed power outages as a kid, even now I still love them, Most people do! (except people who need electricity in those moments - downloading information, storing lots of food in refrigeration, etc. But the planned means that people can plan ahead. I feel like our holodays are kinda similar.

I like how you brought up the bit about refrigeration and how that would be impacted without electricity. It may be unethical in that regard because some people can't just transport their food or live in a location that is hot where it will all spoil. This would essentially become a waste of food and could lead to some families going hungry.

I like that idea, I think having a day where we are all forced to take a break from electricity and media and spend time engaging in other things.

I think this would be a cool idea, but there's definitely a lot of interesting guidelines that would need to be set up because there would still be businesses or places such as hospitals that would need to use the internet.

Emylee, that is such a swell idea! That really feeds into my childhood love of blackouts, not to mention for a lot of people that would be a forced time off of work, so maybe groups could go camping and hiking and things. That would definitely be better for people like us, in the mountains. People in the middle of the city would be like, well, this sucks.

This is a neat idea. I feel like if this was a holiday it should be celebrated like once a month, to get people connected more.

I remember when in Salmon all of the lights were out except the hospital. During this I remember that night sitting on the porch with my dad just admiring the beautiful night sky. I think it would be amazing experience the full view of the night sky from home even if for just one day.

I've always liked the idea of a weekend long holiday - mirroring the purge but obviously not as extreme in any manner. Stores close for those two days, needed hospitality and service workers will split in half and work one day each, so that each gets at least a day off. Essentially the nation practicing this holiday would temporarily shut down for two days. In these two days TV programs and social media would also be recommended to shut down giving people a chance to relax and reset. Unnecessary scheduling by businesses would be considered cruel and unethical. It would be a relax and reset! I don't actually think this would work in practice and would have to many issues, but it would be neat if it did! (I also think this is somebody's nightmare holiday.)

I don't know if either of our holidays would work out too well in practice, but they are very cool ideas! I think that something barring the United States from this are the laws and rights that grant us free access to the Internet and other services. Also, some people have their own electricity conducted through solar panels and things like that. While writing my post I did not think about this in detail, but this could lead to social unrest and claims of a class divide.

I like that idea too, I think it would be good for us to wind down and take a break from TV and social media.

Although this is a cool idea, it would definitely be my nightmare holiday because I would struggle with the idea of having to sit around my house and figure out stuff to do without going into town. I would probably get bored really easily and I would need to do something.

One idea for a holiday is something similar to New Years that would take place on New Years Night. This holiday can be spent setting off a lot of fireworks on New Years night. It could kind of be another 4th of July. I thought of this because I noticed that some people set off fireworks on New Years but not as much as on the 4th of July. I think it would be fun and be a cool light show to add into the New Years celebrations,

I think that this would be a great idea to gather the community or a group of friends to light up fireworks for the New Year.

Imagine adding in to that a midnight parade. That could be fun.

If I could create a holiday, I would do something similar to a Father's day or Mother's day except for friends. It would basically just be a day to celebrate your closest friends by hanging out, having a nice dinner, and giving gifts to each other.

This would be a fun way to appreciate friends and go out for a night of adventures.

A holiday that would be fun is a day to celebrate pets. People could have the day off with their pets for a whole day of fun. It could even be a big event held at a dog park where everyone brought their dogs to play and connect with new people. This would be a great way to break up a normal work week and wind down with natural dopamine.

I would create a holiday that focused on charity work. Like, on that day especially there would be a massive push for donating to causes and going and helping at food banks, disaster relief, and other stuff like that. It would be a big deal, like Christmas. People would be saving up for it for half of the year, and then, instead of our country spending a trillion dollars on Christmas gifts, it would be maybe more like, half of trillion on Christmas and half a trillion on Charity Day. I don't know if that's what it would be called. Still, the focus would be on helping people around the world in need at that time. It should probably be on the dead opposite side of the year as Christmas, though, just to break up the expenses.

If I could create a holiday it would be a day of silence. No one would talk and the only form of communication would just have to wait until the next day. Businesses would have to be closed so no one gets injured due to lack of communication. The only thing that would be acceptable would be hospitals and emergency services because that would be dangerous if it wasn't allowed. This day would give everyone a day to just be and not have to participate in anything. People who need peace and quiet will be given that chance. The next day everyone can resume with normal speaking activities. People who don't want to participate don't have to but they will need to be present at work/school/society without pay because the people who are participating will not be present in society. This is supposed to be like a "mandatory" day of rest, just with peace without bullying or vocal brutality.

Man this is a great prompt. For me I would love a national withdrawal of your money from the bank at the same time day. I really think that would be fun to look at all of your money and to use cash to buy stuff. No I'm just kidding that would be very very bad for the economy. I actually think a ye olde day would be nice. I don't know, this is really just what came to my head. It would entail people not using cars and the internet being turned off and everyone just living a simpler life for a day cooking from fires and doing everything old fashioned style.
