Movies (Alyssa)

There is always that one movie that sticks out and stays with us forever. Whether it be a specific moment, or the entire movie. What is your favorite movie/tv show, and why is it important to you?

My favorite movie would have to be Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. Their entire movie franchise is great, with this specific one sticking out. The directors had a great plot, symbolizing what many people fear most: the loss of loved ones. By doing anything to keep Padme alive, he falls into the dark side, thus yearning for more power. Showing people how easy it is for them to feel the want of more power, though corruption awaits on the other side. It's important to me because of one of the main themes, doing anything to keep a loved one-though it's just fate, no one wants to lose anyone dear to them. Overall, 10/10 movie in its time, and will be the best made in its franchise.

A movie that has always been one I can watch over and over again is Cars 1. The journey of lightning McQueen through his first season of racing just really shows how put in a different setting any character can grow. When he ends up in radiator springs at first he just wants to get done with his task and go back to racing, alone like he likes it. However through his time spent there he learns that he doesn’t have to be alone, he can rely on others. Each car in the small town represents something lightning doesn’t have; Mater is a friend, sally is love, sarge is discipline, and red is emotion. Each of these traits is shared with lightning and displayed at the final race of the season in his letting chick hicks win and instead helping the king to finish his last race.

What I like especially about Cars is the setting of Radiator Springs. This place functions as more grounded space that strips Lightning of his celebrity face. The film uses small details to show that change rather than just telling it. The muted color palette and slower pacing in the town contrasts with the bright, fast world of the racetrack. This visually symbolizes his transformation into a more humble character. Beyond personal growth, this movie is great because it critiques the instant praise and inflated egos of the culture of modern sports and celebrities. This suggests that real success comes from respect and your character, not just trophies.

Wow, I forgot about cars. Especially the 1st one. I feel like they made a great point in this movie and how they made it so competitive but also for kids and adults. I used to watch this movie all the time as a kid and it brings back so much memories. I feel like the movies just got more complicated and confusing as the new movies came out but cars 1 also holds a special place in my heart.

A movie that still really sticks with me is the Princess Bride. Not only because the movie is incredible, but because I have early childhood memories of my dad reading that book to me and my older sister. Also, as someone who typically hates all things romance genre, this is one of the only romantic stories that I really enjoy and will willingly watch. I think that one of the reasons why I can stand this movie more than others is because of the theme of revenge and justice, two things that particuarly spark my interests. Inigo's quest for vengeance shows the purpose of closure, and how intense, emotional wounds can still have a powerful effect on others even years later. This movie also portrays true love very well, it shows love as something that requires sacrifice, persistence, and choice rather than instant fulfilment. This differs from other love stories because it shows real love, not just performative romance. These reasons are what makes this story so memorable to me. And it is even so important that I'm sure I will be showing and reading this story to my future children as well.

GOOOOOOOOOD MORNIN' VIETNAMMMMM
"Fortunate Son" playing in background

Such a great movie, and of course Robin Williams absolutely steals the show! It’s about Adrian Cronauer, a radio DJ in Vietnam, who shakes things up with his funny, wild broadcasts that keep the soldiers entertained. But the movie isn’t just comedy—it also dives into some serious stuff, like the difference between the real war and the official propaganda, the limits of free speech, and the strict rules from military authority. You also get a look at the daily lives of Vietnamese people and why some were against the U.S. presence. It’s a perfect mix of humor, heart, and a bit of history rolled into one.

10/10 would recommend.

I haven't watched this movie yet, but your description makes it seem interesting. I absolutely love Robin Williams, and he seems like the kind of actor that would bring chaotic energy and real warmth into this comedy movie. Also, the way you mentioned themes like propaganda vs reality and free speech under military rule sounds like a war story that is more humane. I typically hate watching movies, but this seems like one I could actually enjoy.

Due to the way you describe this movie I feel like i’m going to have to watch it. I love movies that can be funny either through the whole movie or at the start, but they transition into being serious. Whether it’s about someone or something. I’m going to have to give this one a try tonight.

A movie that really stuck with me is The Goonies. My siblings and I would watch this all the time when we were younger. The movie is about this group of kids that find an old pirate map and end up going on this treasure hunt. As they go on their adventure they are getting chased by a family of criminals who's also after the treasure. But my favorite part of this movie is a scene where they have a chance to get themselves out of all the dangerous situations, but they decide to continue on and see it through to the end. And one of the main reasons they do is because they all have to move due to a company planning on destroying all of their homes to build a country club. And this could be their last time to have this big of an adventure all together before they have to move.

In my opinion my favorite movie is the notebook. I know this doesn’t seem like a match for me but i really love this movie because it shows how if you really do love someone then you’ll be willing to do the extreme to try to show them things. Even in the movie when the girl is gonna marry the other guy, he keeps his promise and makes a whole house just to show her he cared. This sticks with me because this movie helped me through some rough times as well. Even though at first you might view it as sad, you can learn from it mabye even though it’s a movie. This is kind of how i know view my relationships with people in a way, if they think im not genuine and i really do care about them, im willing to go to heights to show them.
