#FreeBritney

Kevin Federline this month, released his book You Thought You Knew: What I’ve Lived Through with Britney Spears and Our Boys. This novel offered a different perspective on his relationship with Briney Spears and their family life. It also opposes Britney Spear’s memoir, The Woman in Me. The book contains allegations of unhealthy behaviors that Spears presented to her children, posing her as mentally unwell. Federline accuses Spears of drinking while pregnant and using cocaine while breastfeeding, damaging their young children’s well-being. He also claims that their sons were afraid of her as teenagers. The boys informed their father about an incident where Spears would stand in their doorway at night, holding a knife. Federline also addresses Spear’s conservatorship and his opinions on the matter. Britney Spears had her father as her legal authority over her financials, career, and personal decisions due to her not being all mentally there. Spears highly disagreed with this and claimed that she was forced to perform medicated against her will. The #FreeBritney movement occurred when fans questioned why she was held under such strict control despite her successes. Fans then organized protests and even influenced media coverage. This movement highly impacted the end of the conservatorship. In his book, Federline claims that Spears highly exaggerated how much control she lost under the conservatorship. He viewed the situation as more of a protection than an abusive system. He also believes that the #FreeBritney movement caused more chaos than actual help. He proposed that instead, people should be fighting for a “Save Britney” movement, implying current concern for her mental well-being.

However, though this book seems believable and unfortunate, there is speculation on how much of this information is truly correct. Some speculate that this release of the book is more for financial gain rather than awareness or better understanding of their past situation. Federline received child support payments from Spears for nearly two decades. However, those payments recently ended after their children entered adulthood. The timing has fueled public suspicion that the book was meant to replace that lost income. Federline has not maintained a consistently well-paying career after his early years as a dancer. While he earned some income as a DJ, most reports indicate that he heavily relied on the child support payments to sustain his lifestyle and fully raise his children. In an interview however, Federline denied these claims. He admitted that he wanted the book to be successful, but not because he wanted financial success from it. Many media outlets currently are ignoring or disbelieving this statement and still argues that this novel was driven by money.

What do you guys believe? Was the motive of this novel for money, or do you think it truly was about awareness. Also, do you think this book was an exaggeration for more publicity, or do you think that the details presented in this novel were accurate?

I think that the motive for this book was for awareness. I say this because they seemed very serious and passionate about the circumstances they were in. I also do this that the book was a combination of both exaggeration and for publicity. I say this because the things could be and might be accurate but they way they might of described them made it to be very exaggerated.

I agree with you that the purpose for the book was for awareness. I also think he wants to defend his past marriage and persuade people to believe his side of the divorce. The release of the novel was extremely covenant financially wise, but I don't believe it was his privative motive.

These arguments, whether Brittany was a victim or not, seem unfounded by either side. My thought is it is a mix of both parties: what I think is she probably took drugs and defended her claim by saying that he had forced her to take drugs, but at the same time, something was wrong with the family itself. I don't really keep up with this stuff, but I think they should go talk to a therapist about their problems. Also, why haven't they sued each other or gone to court for the crime of being in possession of drugs in the first place?

I agree with the therapist idea, but maybe the reason for publishing such a book was to either a) make a quick buck, or b) show the world the true side of Britney. Not everything should be told though and some secrets should stay hidden, especially famous people.

I think a part of the situation (to why they wouldn't just go to therapy) was because Britney didn't realize she had a problem. It was mentioned in the book how her behavior was not stable, however Britney didn't think anything wrong of it. Britney also published a book years back that would talk about unhealthy behaviors (such as almost purposefully driving off a cliff), and yet she didn't seem to find any of it out of the ordinary. But the whole suing thing you make is a good point. Maybe it was because he loves/loved her, but it is intriguing how he hasn't taken any of this drug-related stuff to the authorities, especially with his children's well-being at hand.

The entire situation is strange and twisted as it mostly is in the celebrity world. And I’m sure that they have both separately gone to therapy but to admit that as a celebrity is a hit on publicity. People like this act like the high school girl group that all of a sudden got a fight and now everyone’s angry at each other and throwing shade

With all the arguments it really could go either way. Being famous and with the fame still want more money, or try and show the behind the scenes-ish of their family. But probably more towards for awareness, because of what Britney has done, and the popularity can really get to people, that could cause the unbalanced nature. I do think that some parts could be true while others being complete exaggerations.

He touched on popularity or fame as part of the problem in this situation. And yeah, just by being popular and famous people can get away with terrible things and they’re also able to push blame and bad light onto really anyone that they want. You see the same situation in high school all the time. A friendship ends and all of a sudden rumor started about both parties. None of it should be taken fully seriously specially if one party is trying to use their social power to sway people into their support.

When I see headlines or books of movies like this, I just think, oh rich are doing rich things again and making a scene. So to look at any of the story and believe that any of it is exactly as either of them say does not sit well with me. As for why he wrote the book he wrote it for all the reasons listed. Yes he wants the money. Yes he wants to bring awareness to the situation. Yes he’s doing it just to make a scene. People do terrible things to each other for twisted reasons. Both parties involved here had so many other options than to publish vastly differing stories to try and push the public eye poorly upon the other.
