World War 3

Because we are all high school students, many of us are not greatly concerned with the current conflict taking place across the world. I have done some research into the history of this conflict and how it developed into a full-scale invasion however, many of our peers know nothing more than a few jokes about this topic. I think that it is important that we educate ourselves on worldly matters such as this one; this conflict could soon turn into a new world war and by that time it will be our generation and specifically our age group's responsiple for fighting a war started by the disagreements of those before us. Before I ask a question regarding the invasion, i will first offer a brief history of the relations between Ukraine and Russia. It all started with the fall of the USSR (which previously controlled Ukraine). Due to the fact that Ukraine was a territory of Russia for decades, much of the country is filled with Russian monuments, historical sites and Russian speaking residents. This is a large reason that Russia has recently invaded Ukraine, they believe that Ukraine is filled with Russian people that should be Russian citizens. Of course there are plently of other reasons used by Russia to attempt to justify this unwarranted warfare, but it is quite appaernet that they feel threatened with very few communism influenced countries left today. For this reason, many believe that Russia is attempting to revive the "Iron Curtain" and rise to global power once again. With all that being said I ask, because of modern technology and social media how will a potential world war be different from past wars? Do you think the economic strain that NATO and its allies have put on russia via tariffs and trading restrictions will be enough to stop them in their tracks and prevent them from continuing to campaign through eastern europe or potentially further?

With all of the technology we have today, a potential war could be more destruction than ever before. That could also mean that first aid could also be better than ever. There’s no way of telling how this will affect everything, but a WWlll in the 21st century could be the worst war in history.

First aid in a war could definitely be much quicker with our technology, because we could see what happens in real time. Hopefully things don't escalate too quickly.

The weapons available could certainly cause an elimination of the human race. In the madness of war, drastic measures may be taken. I would hate to see such violent measures, but as long as I am prepared to meet my maker, I can keep my peace of mind.

It seems like having technology could go one of two ways. It could either help people out or make everything a lot worse. It’s scary to think about.

I do not think the tariffs and trading restrictions that NATO has placed on Russia will be to any avail. I have read articles stating that Russia has been stock piling resources and military equipment since the end of the Cold War. It is also possible that Putin is crazy enough to engage in nuclear warfare. It is said that today's nukes are estimated to be 40 times more powerful than the ones that the United States dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. Perhaps this is why after the bombing of Japan during WWII, Albert Einstein said "I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." If the rumors of Russia wanting to reclaim the "Iron Curtain" are true, it is almost certain that there will be another world war. However, it will be much different this time because of NATO. Nothing is certain at this point; only time will tell.

I agree, restrictions will not hold back Russia. Besides, natural resources are a big part of why Putin is invading Ukraine to begin with. Also, I really like that quote you shared! Wise words

It's crazy that those inventors could predict how future generations would be impacted with what they created; they really knew that they had opened a door that couldn't be closed. With great power comes great responsibility, so hopefully our world leaders have watched Spiderman.

Restrictions definitely won’t hold them back. They have already started shooting missiles into Ukraine, a simple “you can’t do that” isn’t going to stop them.

I like that you added the quote from Albert Einstein. I have been hearing that quote a lot recently and I think it really helps people understand the potential severity of a nuclear war. I hope that this conflict stay in Ukraine because if not it will certainly become a new world war.

It is crazy to think about what others in the world might do or might not do to help. There isn’t a lot we can do as high school students, that’s for sure.

Lol, maybe Albert Einstein me at that weapon restrictions would be so strict that sticks and stones would be the only options left. But in all seriousness, I think the scarcity of communism which remains globally is what will prevent Russia from domination. It is shocking that the war started just after the Olympic Games. It will be interesting to see how involved the United States will get.

I didn’t consider the timing of everything. It is interesting that this has all started after the Olympic Games, a time when countries come to celebrate unity and athleticism. What’s also interesting is that years after World War ll they honored lots of veterans including Louis Zamperini (Veteran and Olympic runner) whose story is told in the book Unbroken .

You make a good point regarding “the scarcity of communism.” The majority of our globe does not share Putin’s political ideals, which means that there will be many more countries fighting against Russia rather than with Russia, if a world war does commence.

It is crazy to think that we are living through one of the horrible times that will likely be in the future history books. I also am interested in how involve we get, I just hope many of the Ukrainians are okay.

I do think social media has a little bit of a different impact on this war, as Russia is putting out misinformation. But, these platforms have the strength to either break us apart or bring us together. I guess we’ll see what happens. I don’t know that we have to worry too much about joining the fight ourselves, as Putin waited until Biden was in office to invade Ukraine because he knew Biden would not do anything about it.

It is interesting how the media now, although much different, has a similar impact to what it did years ago. For example, similarities can be seen with Hitler’s propaganda and what Putin claims to be doing in Ukraine. Putin said in a speech that he is preventing genocide, when it really seems like that is what he is provoking. Could Putin be the next Hitler?

Social media can be bother a benefit and a hindrance in this situation. Many people are being informed of the issues overseas because of social media outlets. Ukrainian people are able to communicate their true thoughts and experiences through technology, allowing individuals from the entire world to witness the tragedies taking place. No countries with modern technology can use the excuse used during the Holocaust of “We did not know…” However, it can be a hindrance because Russian technology is controlled by the government, which is keeping many Russian people from having the capability of communicating with people outside of their country.

That is a good point you made about Putin waiting for Biden. However, we will have elections here relatively soon. War often takes a long time and Putin better hurry with what he is doing because soon Biden may not be in office.

Our generation is so different than the generations of the first world wars. Based on the reactions to quarantining, masks, the COVID vaccine, president Biden, Black Lives Matter movements, and other controversial topics, along with the attitude on social media, I just don't see that many people in the United States would take a war seriously. Besides that, our advanced technology has a big impact on communication in the world. If a world war does break out, I think information about it would spread so fast, and warfare would look a lot different as well. I think other countries would respond much quicker because of this.

I think the potential of this war becoming something greater than we predict is shadowed by technology. By that I mean the access we have to video footage of what is going on in Ukraine. I have seen tik toks making jokes of real war footage, which makes it seem less serious. It is also interesting at how public a lot of information about this war is. There is a huge difference between previous wars and what we are seeing now.

There have been conflicts in our lifetimes, such as tensions in Afghanistan, but this seems to be the first time war has been declared during our existence. From the isolation we experience and the general safety we feel, it seems weird. I wonder if times are getting worse or if I have just lived naively for the past eighteen years.

Putin has demonstrated his clear lack of morality through his recent attacks on innocent Ukrainian people. Many lives have been needlessly lost because of his actions, and his decisions only seem to be amplifying. While I do believe that NATO’s recent sanctions will have a large impact on the economy of Russia, I am not inclined to believe that they will be severe enough to stop Putin. Russian people have experienced economic catastrophes many times before, and Putin has repeatedly shown his lack of empathy towards his people. The trade restrictions enacted by America and other countries will cause great distress to Putin’s people, however, I doubt their suffering will come anywhere close to quenching their government’s thirst for power. I estimate that Russia’s armed forces will not stop with just Ukraine, and will continue to try to build their modern “Iron Curtain” by invading other European countries in an attempt to gain more power.

If Russia continues to invade even with the sanctions what do you think the next course of action will be? Will the US send troops to help the Ukrainians? Or will US stay more passive because it is on the European front?

I have only heard pretty vaguely about this topic. I’m not sure if it’s the lack of time spent on the internet or watching news, but the only thing I’ve heard about it has been from other people. What I do know is that the restrictions put up by NATO could definitely help protect the people in Ukraine. I also think that the rest of the world has been keeping an eye on this and if they are all in their right minds they would do something to help. Maybe the United States will do what they do best and intervene. A lot is uncertain in the world right now and it seems we just have to hope for the best.

The way that our world relies on technology has a large effect on many people. In the past wars, they were not as reliant through devices and technology. Also through the direction of viewing through the lenses, we would have no idea what would be really happening. The innocent Ukrainian people and all that live in Ukraine are being attacked by Putin and his people. I believe that the timing of this war was planned. Through all of the trials, disgusting truths, and hardships, technology has allowed us to understand and realize what is really happening to children, families, and individuals going through this crisis.

Technology is much more advanced. Hacking electronics now is much more effective than soldiers can be on the ground. It will be a new type of warfare.

The tariff and restrictions that NATO has put on Russia will not be enough to stop them. The must have predicted that something like this would happen and probably have been stock piling resources for this exact thing. I do not believe that Russia will stop unless they are forcefully stopped or an agreement is arranged. The question is how far the US and other powerful nations will intervine.

I won't pretend to know what is happening and what it all means. Quite honestly I don't think that my opinion matters in this subject because of my lack of knowledge. I think that is an attitude that needs to be shared more in our time. Even though I don't have an opinion that matters, I still do care about the situation and try to be some what up to date about what is happening. I have thought about what warfare would look like today and it honestly scares me. The information part of it is terrifying and the physical power that Russia has is tremendous. All it would take is one nuke in space and basically all satellites are destroyed and a significant number of people on the planet will experience serious amounts of radiation. And Russia has a lot more than one nuke.

Tariffs will certainly slow the Russian movement. I don’t think it will entirely stop them. With the vast amount of technology today warfare would definitely cause more destruction than ever before. One other thing to think about is how this war if it happened would be fought. I think more cyber warfare would be seen. Satellites would be a huge target because of the high dependence we have on them today, destruction of satellites may be more harmful than attacking a location.

Cyberwarfare seems almost more scary than physical to me just because it isn't out in the open and it depends on the manipulation of information

Technology has became a big part of our world today and I think in the event of another world war it would have a large affect. In the previous world wars it took people weeks possibly even months to receive information, now it is merely a click away for most people. I don't completely understand the full affect of it because I haven't seen it first hand. However, I can only imagine how difficult it is for the people involved. I think that it is hard to say what to do exactly but someone needs to step in before this becomes even worse.

Personally I don’t like thinking about of our country going to war, especially when we are just beginning to join the adult world. I believe that technology will only make things worse because there will be so many stories on what is actually happening and we will not know which ones are true. However our country is no stranger to creating fake news around global events, I fear that it may only get worse if we continue to poke our noses where they do not belong.

I do not think that at the moment we should expect to go to war. Ukraine is not one of the allied countries and we do not have to protect it. However, the US has a history of imposing itself in wars where it doesn’t necessarily belong. While I think we logically are not a part of this war, we might end up being a part. At the moment though, it should not be our focus.
