Weighted Grades (Chloie)

Throughout our high school careers we have all had the option to take advanced classes. Some of us chose to take those harder classes for the knowledge and possibly the college credits. While some of us made it through these classes with a 4.0, others didn’t. Do you think that there should be a system put in place for the kids taking these classes to have a higher GPA than the kids that chose not to? Weighted grades would offer this, so why do you think our school hasn’t put this in place yet? Would this give more incentive for kids to take higher level classes?

*I will give you time to respond to this during class tomorrow. -Mr. Pace*

I think the school and students would benefit greatly from a weighted gpa scale. The incentive of a higher more equal gpa would encourage students to take higher level classes. I feel our school has not implemented this gpa scale because of the work it takes to do so. No one is willing to put in the work and face the challenges of changing to weighted gpa. Personally, I would be much more motivated to take higher level classes if the gpa scale was weighted.

I agree that sometimes having an incentive to do work is nice at times, but I don’t think it should be used as a grade buffer for those that don’t want to do the work for the class. I think that it would definitely have its pluses and minuses.

I feel like having a weighted gpa shouldn’t be an incentive to make more kids take advanced classes. Either way, the same kids will take the advanced class. There will always be a group of them and usually it isn’t a very big one. This is kind of nice because then they have more one on one time with the teacher. I feel like a weighted gpa would be good for those who put on the work for the advanced classes, but I don’t think it should be put in place just to bump up someone’s grade from a b to an a.

I think it would be a great incentive for those who are wanting to reach valedictorian. They would be forced to take these harder, weighted classes just to stay in competition with the students who take it to learn. Being a school in west rural America, the faculty probably doesn't see weighted gpa as a matter of importance. They'd rather spend their money, time, and effort on sports or building upgrades.

I agree that weighted grades may be an inset I’ve for some kids to take advanced classes. I also agree that if they want to run for valedictorian they should be taking the higher classes. Weighted grades may be good, but I don’t think it is right for someone that gets a b in a class that they can automatically get an a.
