Stereotypes (Chloie)

As teens, there are plenty of stereotypes that get placed on us. For example, we make bad decisions or have no work ethic. Sure there are people that fall under these categories but there are many of us that prove these stereotypes wrong. This seems to be a generational problem, over time different generations seem to have a problem with younger people. This problem spans across different religions and races. What has been one of the stereotypes placed on you as a younger person? Was it offensive to you or were you able to brush it off? If you haven’t experienced something like this, are there issues you find across different generations?

I know one stereotype that I have had for my whole life is being dubbed the goody “Mormon” girl. Growing up I felt like people would look at me in a different way or avoid me because of my religion and was kind of insecure about it. Now that I am older, I am sure that this stereotype is still somewhat around but I honestly don’t care. Good for them for thinking it, but nothings going to change the person I am. I’m proud to be who I am even if my standards or views differ a little from those around me.

I've never really understood religions and their values. Believing in a higher power just never really clicked with me. Which means I understand the stereotypes even less. I'm sure being raised around the same material and teachings will give you all similar ideals, but people are born with different personalities. They have different home situations, likes and dislikes, and environmental factors that mold and shape them into their own self

I believe a lot of people in Salmon feel this stereotype, which is unfortunate. Even though there should not be stereotypes based off religion, it is great that you feel you have overcome it and are better than the stereotypes placed on you.

I live in a family that is very agriculture based. My grandma owns a ranch, and my aunt and cousins work on it most every day. I want nothing to do with that kind of lifestyle. I am infatuated with the arts and higher education, and I'm sure that side of the family judges me for not living what they consider the normal way. But I love learning and theater, and nothing they do will change that.

I can be hard when you don’t fit into the family expectation so to say, but it is always good to find your own path and way of doing things. At the end of the day other people’s opinions really don’t matter.

I feel as if this stereotype encompasses this town. Living in Salmon, it is kind of expected to know how to ride horses or be i volves in agriculture. I think there should be no judgement in breaking this stereotype and doing what makes you happy.

A stereotype that I have always lived with is being a “hockey girl”. Hockey is a male dominated sport, and growing up playing with the boys, I was always stereotyped as weak or just the girl on the team. When I was younger this stereotype often hurt my feelings, but now I am proud to be a girl that plays hockey.

I agree that stereotypes can be hurtful when we are younger, but over the years they can become a strength. It’s kind of funny how much people opinions of us affect us so much, until we learn that it is not a bad thing.
