Blog Post By: Adyson Sawyer

I know for a fact that we have all experienced a feeling of embarrassment at some point in our lives, however we rarely ever share these experiences with other people. In an article by the American Psychological Association titled, "On No You Didn't!", they talk about why your body responds to being embarrassed and the psychological side of how it is heathy for your brain. For this blog post I want us to share with each other one of our most embarrassing stories and the tell how it shaped you as a person.

Personally one of my most embarrassing moments I've experienced was at this years Girl's State. Hailey and I were apart of the media crew and wanted to create a video of us getting married, while the video production was wonderful the after math was not. The entire mass people watching the nightly broadcast thought that the video and Hailey and I's relationship was real. For the rest of that week we had to pretend to be a lesbian couple in order to not disappoint everyone.

NOW EXPOSE YOURSELF!!

As I read the article posted by Ady, I found myself relating to those people who have feared embarrassment so much that they avoided situations altogether. This is a hard way to live. Even when people assure us our mishaps are not that bad, we often discount their opinion. It is mysterious why we do this, and I am grateful Ady chose such an interesting topic to spark my curiosity. My most recent example of embarrassment is getting a speeding ticket. I felt shameful as the cars I had zoomed past minutes before all made their way by me on the side of the road. I also felt humiliated by the thought of explaining to my dad why I was driving recklessly in his favorite vehicle.

Being pulled over can be very embarrassing especially if you are in a busy area. Hopefully not too many people saw you pulled over.

I think common things such as speeding tickets are more embarrassing in small towns because it typically ends up being witnessed by several people we know. It also gets mentioned in the newspaper that many people read and it can be embarrassing to have our downfalls exposed in that way.

I’m the amount of times I have been pulled over, I can attest to your statement that it is embarrassing. However, after being stopped by an authority, I noticed how my attitude of driving immediately changed and I became more grateful for the privilege. I also like what you mentioned about the cars you had just passed going by you, because this shows the consequences of getting in a hurry. Lastly, when I am the witness of others being pulled over it reminds me to be more careful and monitor my own actions.

I think no matter what it is, if you have pulled off the road and people are looking at you as they pass it is embarrassing. Whenever I have to pull over everyone just automatically thinks that something is wrong too.

I would imagine that being pulled over in a busy area would be very awkward especially if those individuals that drive by know you personally or know of you. Hey but you lived life on the wild side and that it is a good thing haha!

Just being pulled over can be embarrassing. I think criticism from parents is the hardest part about it even though parents have been through the same thing.

I definitely agree that having to tell parents you got pulled over is probably the worst part. I remember this last summer where I got pulled over and I had to tell my dad and I was terrified, even though I know he has been pulled over multiple times.

I too have been pulled over but it was because they thought I was too young to drive, that was a bit embarrassing.

One time a friend sent me a TikTok video featuring me. The video was basically roasting me for what I wore to a school dance but it wasn't a very big deal to me. However, the video ended up getting somewhere around a million views so even though I did not really care about what the video had to say, it was still pretty embarrassing. This situation did not change me at all and I am still the same person though.

I think the magnitude of our embarrassment is based upon the number of people that witness the event(s). That being said, millions of views on that Tik Tok probably made the situation worse than if only a handful of people had viewed it.

I believe that the exposure social media is capable of, has an impact on the choices we make in public. It is so easy for something so ordinary to be taken out of context and made into a comedic clip. Personally, I generally shy from doing goofy things when a camera is present lol. Also, as Hailey said, I think the amount of witnesses to an embarrassing situation make it just that much worse.

This makes me wonder if people that have been turned into Vines or memes get embarrassed at all, or if they're just happy they got so famous. I think it would be surreal to have my face plastered on the internet as a sticker for everyone to see.

The situation that Ady mentioned definitely ranks high on both my list of embarrassments, but also my list of comedic situations; it was definitely both. However, a strictly embarrassing situation for myself was when I recently got very sick at the start of my team’s basketball game against South Fremont. After asking my coaches to take me out of the game immediately, I puked in the garbage can on the end of the court in front of all of the South Fremont crowd and the visitors from Salmon. It was gross lol.

One of my embarrassing experiences was when I was heading to a morning baseball practice when I had car troubles and had to pull over. I was on the side of the highway with my hood up and people drove by staring at me. I always hate raising my hood in public because people always assume something is significantly wrong. Personally, since I am a vehicle fanatic, and spend so much time working on my vehicles, it is embarrassing when others see I’m having a mechanical issue. This wasn’t all that bad of a situation, but it was one that came to mind when reading this prompt. Additionally, this experience did not change me as a person because my mechanical failures were not preventable. I will continue to modify my vehicles without the worry of others seeing an issue with it, in the event of one.

That is something that is embarrassing to me, too. Except I am not a mechanic guru so that makes it worse because then I have to like look it up on YouTube or ask for help or something. I wish I was more of a mechanic.

One time in 8th grade during cross country practice I had to use the bathroom. But the one port-a-potty at the school was occupied when we were leaving for our run, up around S-hill. The closest bathroom up there is at the golf course. So I thought I could make it. Turns out I could not. I pooped my pants right before getting there and then I just threw away my underwear in the golf course port-a-potty, cleaned up, and ran back to the high school commando. When I got to the school I grabbed my jeans out of my car and went straight to the school port-a-potty, now unoccupied, and changed into those, throwing my shorts into that port-a-potty. I was very much the last one back and everybody kind of assumed what happened. I wish I could say this experience taught me to use the bathroom beforehand. But, sadly, although this was the first time something like this happened to me, it would not be the last.

I feel like this is something all runners fear. At least you sort of learned your lesson because the second time was not as bad, right? It’s a good thing you did not have to throw away your racing shorts.

I think that since you shared this experience you are less embarrassed. Which shows growth and understanding that it is okay to not always be in control of what happens. However, it’s tough you had to go through this twice and hopefully it won’t happen again.

It was pretty challenging to think of an experience I was truly embarrassed, so I guess that goes to show that it doesn’t really matter. The first one I thought of was at basketball practice last year when I tripped over Hailey’s foot and landed on my elbow. My coach then proceeded to try to convince me that it was just my funny bone. My mom made me go to the doctor and it was kind of embarrassing having to tell everyone what happened. The next week it was super bruised and everyone at school was asking what happened too. I can’t say that experience really affects me at all now, except for maybe that elbow is a little crooked.

I remember hearing about this after practice and being sad I missed it. However, I think that sometimes we don’t want to relive these memories because we still feel embarrassed of them. I mean really we remember these experiences better than anyone else and half the time everyone forgets about it by the next week.

A time that I can remember being genuinely embarrassed was when I got asked to prom last year. As I was walking back into school everyone was following me as I went into the library and before I knew it literally like half the school was in there. Than in ran the pregnant “lady” in the wheelchair and the nurse. Before I could fully process what was going on the pregnant “lady” gave birth to the baby which was my date dressed in a giant diaper saying he was born to go to prom with me. I said yes of course but I was still in shock so it took me a minute to put it into words. After that my mother proceeded to send it to all of our relatives and show it to everyone she could think of. It was super nice to be asked in such an elaborate way but I was slightly embarrassed by the amount of people that saw it mainly becasue I wasn’t prepared but now I find it really funny and it’s a great memory I have. Honestly I had no reason to be embarrassed anyways because it was meant to be funny and fun.

My experience was fairly recent. It was after a hockey game and we were in a rush to leave but I had to use the restroom. So, I ran back in side and went to the restrooms. There was a group of older women standing outside of what I thought was the boys so said excuse me an pushed past them. As I was doing that they said “umm someone is in there”, and then I realized that I had just started to go in the girls bathroom. Now being embarrassed, I had to turn around and go back through the group of women and go into the mens. My embarrassed did not last very long but it was pretty embarrassing in the moment.

It is interesting to consider too that they likely forgot about the whole thing. It is weird what we value as memorable compared to what others think is memorable about us.

In my life I believe I have had many moments like these. A time when I had experienced this was when I was in a basketball game a few years ago and I was running down the court and threw the ball to the girl that I though was on my team, but wasn't. This was very embarrassing because it was an easy pass and it wasn't like she stole it. I literally turned to her and threw her the pass, then I realized she wasn't who I thought she was. Everyone in the stands, on the bench, and my team witnessed this.

One embarrassing story of mine was when I was at some sort of church activity, and we were talking about dream jobs. At some point I said I definitely wasn’t putting milk on a shelf for the rest of my life, um Patrick Bills was there and he definitely heard it. This didn’t change me though I’m still not stocking milk for the rest of my life.

Embarrassing things happen everyday. It’s really difficult to pin point one and even remember others. Something embarrassing that has happened to me is the common, walking around with your fly undone. A friend did make me aware of the situation but it still makes me wonder how many people actually saw. Despite how common that is, doesn’t change how embarrassing it can be.

In the moment, we always wish we could forget everything about an embarrassing situation to save ourselves. But afterward, it's such a bummer to forget about what happened, because it's nice to be able to laugh at ourselves.

One of my most embarrassing moments happened in the first month of school this year. I was in senior project and had both my headphones in when I got up out of my chair to go and get a computer. When I was walking back I wasn't paying attention and was just going to sit back down. When I sat down the kid who was sitting next to me had yanked my chair out from underneath me and I fell onto the ground so hard. It was so embarrassing especially since I was new to this school and didn't know anyone yet and I thought I broke my elbow which is just funny and ironic.

I am not someone who is easily embarrassed. Farting, burping, and falling don’t usually make me feel ashamed. However, if I like someone, I find my very existence in front of them embarrassing. A couple years ago, it was my time of the month. After discovering this in a fit of range, I took a long shower and forgot my dirty clothes (the underwear bloody side up) on the bathroom floor. I went about my day completely forgetting my carnage in the bathroom. Low and behold a of couple hours later the person I had a crush on stopped by for a surprise visit. To my misfortune, bodily functions made their demands and he went into the bathroom with my dirty clothes. Well he didn’t say anything but it was impossible to have not seen. My mortification lingers to this day.

I find myself in many embarrassing situations that I entirely put myself in. Whether going too hard on school dress up days or some elaborate scheme I come up with, I always find that it's better to laugh away the pain and have a good time. As a performer, I've learned that things on and off stage never go perfectly as planned, and I've personally experienced and witnessed others make a fool of themselves in front of a live audience. Just this last April, I had a pretty bad fall onstage where I slipped on silk scarf I was trying to pick up. Thankfully, someone was recording that night and I have a reference that I look at whenever I need a pick-me-up. I'll laugh hysterically at the video for minutes on end, because the fall is so unexpected in context and I hit the ground right on beat with the music. After that show, I had probably 30 people ask me if I was okay, which was a whole new wave of embarrassment.

I am usually good about not being ambarassed about things I have done. Being embarrassed about how who I was is a different story, but the story that come to mind was during the Beauty and the Beast. On opening night I had to stand still while Bell sang but I didn't get on stage soon enough so when the curtain opened I froze at the entrance of the stage. However, one of the stage crew had to get by me and instead of making room for her I just panicked and blocked her a bit. So the audience probably saw some of that struggle as the first scene started.
