Daily Literary Quote
“Christopher Columbus, as everyone knows, is honored by posterity because he was the last to discover America.”
                                                                                                         -James Joyce

Journal Prompt
Take a look at this article from The Oatmeal.  What are some issues with the myth that Christopher Columbus "discovered" the Americas?  Explain.  Do you think Columbus should be honored with a holiday in the United States?  Why or why not?

No, because people already lived in America.

I do think he should be honored because he discovered the Americas for Europe but he did not discover it for the world. Native Americans were already living here.

I do think we should honor him because we wouldn't be where we are today without him coming here, however when he arived there was already native americans here which kinda shows some people already knew about it.

Some issues with Christopher Columbus discovering the Americas is that the Indian's were already living here. Although I do think he should still have a holiday because america wouldn't be what it is today without him bringing the white men here.

He says he discovers America but obviously there were native Americans already there. Plus there was other people on the ship that came over with him.

Columbus did not discover America, but Leif Erikson did. This was more than enough time before Columbus did, and yet we still have a holiday for him. On top of the idea that he did not discover America, we find that he treated the Natives horribly. This leads me to the opinion that he should not be celebrated, and should not have a holiday for his name.

I think he should be recognized, but I don't think that he should have a holiday. He did do some awful things that should not grant him a holiday.

He did not discover the Americas, more like marked a new era, and we celebrate him for that, because that's when time truly started to change. And I think its patriotic to celebrate him. Although I think the truth about these historical events should be taught.

He did not actually discover the new world or the Americas, there were Native Americans here long before. With my previous knowledge I would say yes, let's give him a holiday. After reading this article however My opinion is one that opposes my previous; he does not deserve a holiday.

I do not think that Columbus deserves his own holiday. Truthfully with the knowledge that he never "discovered" america we can completely take away the reason that we should even have a Columbus day. If you need more reasoning that he never deserved a holiday to remember him in the first place he killed the natives and hunted them for sport, enslaved them, raped them, and spread disease.

Columbus shouldn't have his own holiday because he wasn't first and he did bad stuff

I believe that he does deserve a holiday because ye did find what is now America. Even though there are some facts that make it seem like he didn't, you cant ignore the fact he traveled many miles and out his life at risk to find this land. Witch I believe deserves some recognition.
