I’m guessing all of you have played the game “would you rather” before. Although that game can be fun, I feel as if most people cannot give an honest, and thorough explanation to their answer. Now that you have time to think and explain your reasoning, would you rather only live by the ocean, or the mountains the rest of your life?
I get asked this question a lot, and I have never actually broken it down and thought about my honest opinion. Personally, I would have to choose to live by the mountains. Living in an area like we do currently, provides so many opportunities. Although we may not be around water 24/7, we still have access to lakes, rivers, etc., as well as the mountains. When you live by the ocean, it limits the options. The ocean provides people with the ability to learn how to surf, fishing, and snorkeling, but not much else. With mountains brings, hunting, fishing, skiing, hiking, berry picking, hot springs, and so much more. I am grateful for all the experiences that mountains bring, which is why I chose mountains for my answer, and I will vacation to the ocean.

To me there is really only one logical choice, and that would be living near the ocean. As someone who's lived near mountains their whole life its gotten to be routinely bland, however living near the ocean would be a nice change of scenery. Also the coast is far better at keeping seasons at bay. Even more northern coast lines (Oregon Coast) deal with less harsh winters but also have a more enjoyable summer.

While I have a different perspective that you, I do understand how a place can get old. I feel that areas near the oceans are more urbanized that mountainous areas are, so it can be assumed that living near the ocean offers more of a city life, which from my time speaking with you is fitting.

I understand what you mean about a setting getting old. I think that this feeling would occur to me if I had to live by the ocean.

Although I am still sticking to my original answer of mountains, I never put into perspective the different coasts. With each coast brings a different lifestyle.

If I were to choose to live in the mountains or by the ocean, I would choose mountains because of the abundant resources and opportunities within them. Within the mountains, one can hike, climb, ski, hunt, and pick berries/mushrooms, and these are only hobbies on land. Within the mountains are streams, rivers and lakes, which offer kayaking, swimming, and fishing. There is something to do in the mountains during every season, unlike the ocean. Therefore, my life would be much more enjoyable in the mountains than the ocean.

It is very true with what you say that while the mountains could be used for all seasons, the ocean is only the most enjoyable during the summer months. And we are so lucky to live in an area where many opportunities of activities are offered. The ski resort, the public lands for camping, hunting, and swimming in the lakes. So much to do so close to our homes.

This is a very common question when it comes to would you rather. I honestly when I would have to answer it, I would feel torn. When I was a kid, a big phase of mine was being obsessed with the ocean. I would imagine myself living on the beach when I got older. However, with living where we live, and experiences have so close has changed my mine. While I still love the ocean, and are planning beach trips later, the mountains are my home. Even when coming back from a trip to Boise or Idaho Falls, it's great to be surrounded by nature. In a way, it's just like a deep breath to be home and not worry about the rest of the world's problems.

I like what you said about how the forest feel is nice even when you come home from somewhere. I totally agree! Last week when I was driving back and forth from Idaho Falls, I love heading back into the mountain scenery on the way home.

Our mountains are like a bowl of safety, surrounding us with armor. I too feel at home when I am in the mountains, where we live has been kind to us and has nurtured our childhood with memories. Which is why I also would rather live in the mountains than by the ocean.

In all actuality choosing your home is certainly the way most people go. It didn't surprise me that I'm the only one choosing the ocean but we all expected me of all people to be different.

I totally agree with you Shaylee. Being around nature is so refreshing and almost therapeutic. Since there are so many activities to do within the mountains, it can save someone’s day if they are stressed out or worried about something.

This question has always left me confused. As much as I love the place we live and the beautiful scenery, I have always been in love with the ocean and all of the creatures inside it. Although, when I really think about it, I would choose the mountains. Since the ocean is so important to me, I wouldn’t want to spend every day around it and potentially get tired of the beauty of it. Also, in the summers I enjoy being able to go camping, on 4-wheeler rides, hiking, finding natural hot springs, and just being outdoors. Even in the winter, I enjoy snowboarding, sledding down random hills, and the magical scene our forests create no matter the season. Without being located in the mountains, I probably wouldn’t have even gotten my fire dispatching job I fell in love with this summer. I wouldn’t want to change any of those things for the ocean, although I would love to go see the ocean anytime.

I like to think how we were both a little torn between this topic. It's so amazing what different places and things have different meanings to all types of people. The mountains are the comfort but there's something drawing to the ocean and wanting to have that connection to it still is so beautiful.

I like the idea of saving an experience to make it special. It's like eating steak everyday then growing to hate it. However you would think the logic would swing both ways and the mountains would get all quickly.
