For me, I always see things around that make me instantly think, “that reminds me of something”. Symbolic things can be all over for all of us, and I know that I see these all the time. There are many things that can be symbols for something bigger, and it’s different for each and every one of us. What are some things that are symbolic to you?
For me, whenever I see anything about the NFL, it reminds me of how my grandpa would scream at the TV everytime the 49er’s weren’t doing great. When I see Salt Lake Express buses it brings me back memories of being in New York and all the fun I had there. Lastly, whenever I see the color teal, I think about my grandma and how it’s her favorite color and how she’s painted her living room teal, has a teal themed bathroom and bedroom, all because the color brings her joy. These are just a few of the symbolic things in my life!

Symbolism is everywhere in our lives, and it will never leave. In my life, there are many examples of different situations that remind me of my past. One of which is a specific corner on Lost Trail Pass. One time, my family and I picked up a hitch hiker on that corner and I think of her every time we drive past it. Since I have always been around sports, my mind immediately goes to different places and experiences i’ve had with sports when I see a volleyball, softball, baseball, basketball, etc. It is something that most of the time makes me happy.

I have something similar with a specific corner that we drive over going to Challis (I believe). Me and my dad call it rattlesnake corner because we ran over a rattlesnake there. When we went to collect the rattle, some random man attempted to "steel" the rattle from it, even though we were the ones who killed it. My dad got in an argument over it and we eventually got to keep the rattle. Funny thing is, I do not think he would have cared, but he just wanted me to have the rattle.

That’s cool that your dad fought for you to keep the rattle. It’s heartwarming to realize all of the small things our parents did for us as we get older, and can understand situations more.

Living where we do, we have to travel to get to a bigger town or city and for as many times as we have probably taken these trips, the roads have memories. I do also remember certain turns in these mountains where me and my family have had to pull to the side to. It also makes a mental path in my mind to know where I am and how much longer I got to travel. Just as much as walls talk, these mountains talk as well with me just as much as it does with your example.

I think it's great that you often think back to a time where you did the right thing and made some women's day. I'm sure she often things about that moment too when she thinks about the trail.

Symbolism comes to me mostly in words or phrases or music. I have certain songs that remind me of my childhood, such as example of "A whole new world," that I would sing with my father, and the "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus that I would listen on over and over again on car rides on my iPod. Also, over the years, my friends and I have kept a book of quotes of funny or interesting things we have said on trips, meeting, and when hanging out together. These quotes bring back memories of joy and laughter from recent times or from way back when.

Of course most of us are bringing up childhood things that still remain prevalent to us now, because that is the only time that we can look back to. I just got to thinking about this, but I hope that we all have current experiences and moments that will eventually be something that we will value and find symbolism in as adults.

It’s very interesting to see that your initial thought revolved around music related memories because that happened to me the other day and I didn’t even realize it until now. I was in the grocery store with my dad, and a song came on that reminded me of when I was little going for drives in the mountains in the old Dodge.

Music is a great example of something that takes you back. And reliving your childhood sounds great. It's nice to put on music that was popular years ago, because you relive the memories of when you first heard the song

For as long as I can remember, my father has taken me and my brother on an annual fishing trip at a small dam in Washington. Although fishing is a very broad subject, anytime that it is brought up the memories from those trips are always the first to come to mind. One family trip can harbor memories that last a lifetime. I have gone on this trip about 12 or more times, each has been sentimental and created cherished memories. Whether it be the nostalgic sound of the dam running, the strong winds that gush in the morning, the years of relationships we have built with people from the dam, or specific moments that get brought up while spending time with family, there are so many moments, things and memories that are symbolic to me. Anytime that someone brings up fishing, or I see something fishing related it reminds me of those trips.

Even with your mentioning of winds and the water running, it reminded me of my camping trips with my grandparents. It's funny how symbolism can just pop up anywhere because camping with my grandparents was something I haven't thought about in a while. Symbolism is and can be so strong in sight, sound and even smell.

Everything I see coincidentally happens to bring a memory to mind. Because my life has been so varied with both good and bad memories everything can be a symbol. Everything from a toy train to a wax sculpture of the presidents bring a memory from back in the day. And that's both great and awful, and really shows the duality of symbols.
