We hear people talking about their “spirit animal” quite often, and how they relate to certain animals, but why is that? It can be comforting for some people. Animals have their own personalities just like humans do, so what animal do you have similar characteristics with, and how?
Since I was a very young baby everyone in my family has always called me a monkey. When I was nine months old I grew to love climbing out of my crib constantly everyday, and I even climbed on top of the fridge around the same age. Not only this, but I did gymnastics and I was always hanging on things and doing crazy flips like monkeys do. Since it was neverending for me to be doing some sort of monkey move, that nickname has always kind of stuck with me throughout my childhood. I have a lot of similar characteristics to monkeys, but I would say my personality is most like a monkey because of how I was always flying around like one.

When I was a fair bit younger my parents often called me a snake for various reasons. They used to tell me that I was manipulative and used that to get what I wanted. Although I don't feel like I'm like that, I've been told many times in the past that I am in fact like that. So I guess I'm a snake but in a reality nobody ever said that was a bad thing.

I have such a different experience than you when it comes to this topic. I have never had one specific animal that everyone related me to. I find it interesting that some people's characteristics can be so prominently linked to an animal, while others are more in the grey. This topic really shows that we as humans are so complex, each different in our own way.

I really like how you mention that being a snake doesn't mean it has to be a bad thing. Looking at the example of a rattled snake, we are afraid of it because of the poison. But in reality, it is just as scared of us as we are of it. It will only bite if necessary. this just goes to show that you can get called a lot of things in life but you don't have to act on them.

I was called to things for different reasons and by different people. The first animal would be a chicken. I was scared of everything as a kid. I would hate to be left behind by my parents. I couldn't even really go to my grandparent's house because I was so scared to have left alone with just them. I also wouldn't try anything new. Food, a roller coaster, or afterschool activities. I got teased by this name so much that I try to be braver and try new things to get out of my comfort zone. The second animal would be an elephant. This is kind a joke between me and my grandma. She has a two-story house and at the time when I was a kid, we didn't. So, when I was at her house, I would stomp down those stairs so loud she would say she didn't know she had an elephant in her house. So now I get complemented when I use my quiet elephant feet down the stairs.

It is really interesting to see the similarities in each other’s personalities from our childhood. I too had characteristics of a chicken when I was young and still do in certain aspects. It’s cool that you and your grandma have a special bond over something so simple.

This topic makes me wonder what drives one person to be different from another. For example when I was a kid, I was so adventurous, playful, and outgoing. However, as you explained you were fearful of trying new things. It is genetics, experiences, nurture, or all of the above, that influences people to be unique?

I panicked when I first read this prompt, because I have no idea what my spirit animal is. And I am still not sure, especially when considering that the definition of a spirit animal is; “[...] a spirit which helps guide or protect a person on a journey and whose characteristics that person shares or embodies.” There has never been one animal that has recurred in my life, or an animal that I have been specifically interested in over another. I asked some people and everyone shared a different answer. So, I went to the internet. I found that I related most to an octopus, they are creative, strategic and intelligent (I don’t relate with the last one). Octopuses are loners, they do not lead a pack mentality. However, they are known to latch onto people and places. I relate to this, once I find a person that I like, they are now my safety, but I am content on my own as well.

I think that's it's so cool that you did more research to find out more about this topic. Being honest, I don't really like to believe in things like this. I feel like putting on the blame for your own actions doesn't make it right. Like with the whole zodiac stuff. Because one was born at a certain time or because of the way the stars are this night make one rebellious or uneasy. I think that it's cool in some ways because my zodiac does fit me in some ways or even our spirt animals. But no matter what one my think it is cool to see how in a way we are connected to the animal kingdom in more ways than we think.

I’m interested to know, did you just use an online quiz to find out what animal you are like? Because after hearing your description of what an octopus is like it seems to fit you quite well. I wonder what it would tell me I am if I took one.

I’ve really never thought about what my spirit animal is. This prompt has taken me all day to think about. But when it comes down to it, I would have to say my spirit animal is a bull. I for one do follow zodiacs and the stars because they mean a lot to me. I am a Taurus and the animal sign for the Taurus is the bull. The bull is the Taurus animal because they are headstrong, leaders, and fierce. I use my leadership abilities in many different activities, and I stay strong as I push myself through every little activity. The bull also represents the Taurus symbol because they like to relax in serene environments. I feel this fits me as every night I take an hour for myself to destress and have some “me time” before bed. I also use Sundays as a relax day to enjoy a day of peace before the busy week. Although it’s taken me my whole life to realize what my spirit animal is, I’m glad this prompt gave me the time to explore it.
