Greetings, and welcome to Pacebook! I want to begin our blogging experience by continuing to get to know one another a little bit better. As you have likely noticed, I am drawing on Dr. Who quite a bit for its connection to literature (the ability of books to transport you through time and space, like a TARDIS, for you Whovians). However, the same is probably equally true for all art, especially music. As a musician, I am naturally drawn to the parallels between music and literature, which was actually the focal part of my Master's Thesis (reading the "jazz novel" as a model for more egalitarian communication in a post-national world). Music also seems to have special ties to memory, though, in a way that transcends language, and a simple few bars from a song can trigger very specific memories. So, I want you to think of a song that serves as a TARDIS for you and transports you to another time and place. One song (of many) that functions as a TARDIS for me is "One Tin Soldier" by The Original Castle (and more famously performed by Coven). More accurately, however, it was performed by my dad, and I didn't actually hear the original until years later. It is a protest song that talks about greed and how it corrupts people and is the root cause behind many (if not all) wars. More than that, though, the song tells a story which is delivered quite skillfully and with ample amounts of development and irony. Actually, the song has many parallels to "The Pardoner's Tale" from Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, which we will be looking at later in the year, but of course I didn't know that at the time; I simply enjoyed the melody, the moral, and the complexities of the song. It is the first "favorite song" I remember having, and the first song I recall attempting to write was a very close imitation of "One Tin Soldier." Hearing it now takes me back to sitting at my father's feet in our old house when I was four or five years old, although I don't think the studio version is as good (the flute part is a little cheesy, really). While it's not a song I listen to very often, it does evoke many memories when I do, and it has certainly had a profound influence on me, both as a person and as a lover of stories. If you've never heard it, here is the original by The Original Castle: Now, I want to hear from you. What is a song that takes you back to another time and place? Explain in detail, and include a link to YouTube, so we can all listen to it as well, please. I look forward to hearing your stories!

As a kid Whitney Houston's interpretation of I Will Always Love You was played nearly everywhere, but most people never really knew that it was a cover. Me however, grew up with Dolly Parton's version and that's because my mom hated Whitney. So whenever the original song pops up I remember when life was easier, before I realized that my life wasn't as good as I thought it was. Dolly's voice is just so calming and takes me back to when I was six and I could just listen to my mother singing along, I had no worries at all. Actively trying to find a song to talk about brought me back to these memories that I'd completely forgotten I'd had, and it was nice to be a kid again. You don't realize how good something was until it's gone and I think that every time I hear a song that reminds me of my mother.

Zack, I think it is awesome that you have this song to remind you of something so touching from your childhood. The song you chose is one that can obtain so many different meanings for each person, and there is a strong message behind it. Thank you for sharing!

“Every Breaking Wave,” by U2 is a nostalgic song for me, it specifically takes me back to 5th grade. Which is when I first got my phone, there was no music on it, but there was one free album on Apple Music. This album was the "Songs of Sureness," so for weeks straight that was the only album I listened to. I connected in particular with “Every Breaking Wave,” because the sound of it drew me in. I listened to this song on repeat when I was skiing and the lyrics motivated me to test my boundaries and fight my fears. This song is a story about feeling fear towards committing to love, these lines represent how the couple in the song is clearly in love and need to jump in and let these feelings free, “Knows that we're in love with defeat, Are we ready to be swept off our feet, And stop chasing every breaking wave.” Overall, I believe, the song illustrates self-sabotage, spoiling a chance of happiness because a person feels they don’t deserve it, or do not want to work hard for it. This song's simplicity in language makes it an open book to analyze. When listening to the song as a child I thought this song represented fighting one's anxieties. That’s how the song motivated me, and now every time I listen to this song I feel the same courage I did as a child. Though this song is not the typical genre of song that I listen to (or listened to as a kid) once I listened to it for probably the hundredth time I got attached to it.

A song that takes me back to a specific time/place is "Fishin' in the Dark" by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. My older brother, Dillon, played baseball for the Hamilton Red Sox for a few years, and this song was played at every field we went to. The summers that involved traveling every week for Dillon's baseball, were my favorite summers I have ever had. Since those days ended, it takes me back to the fun memories I made every time I hear that song. Now that the song "Fishin' in the Dark" holds a special place in my heart, I make sure it gets played at all of my softball games because it would not be the same if I did not hear it played while on the diamond.

A song that brings me back to another time is the song A Whole New World from the Disney movie Aladdin. And this musical number has a special place in my heart for two reasons. The first reason is that it just brings me back to my childhood. When I was younger, I loved to sing and dance and perform to all the Disney movies. Just being able to watch a story about a character who would go through a hardship but to reach that happily ever after, that’s all I wanted to happen to me. Unfortunately life isn’t like that but all these Disney movies and songs bring me back. The second reason is because of the relationship that me and my father have with that song. As I mentioned I loved to perform. So much so that I would need a partner. So my dad would sing and dance with me. And every time that song played, he was the prince and I was the princess. I love my father so much and all the time he has put into providing for my family and building my mother the house of her dreams. I feel like I don’t say it enough to my dad how much I love him. And to end it with the finale note, this song has such an effect on me that it will most likely be the father daughter dance song at my wedding.

Hearing the story behind why you chose the song you did was very interesting and sweet. I too am close with my dad, and we have always done everything together, so I was really able to connect with your story from your childhood experience. I enjoyed hearing both of your perspectives on how this song takes you back to a time/place.

A song that takes me back into the past is “Semi Charmed Life” by Third Eye Blind. This song always takes me back to the past because it’s a song that would always be playing in the car, listening to music around the house, and basically every time we turned on music. I’ve had the words memorized since I was 4, and it’s always so much fun when it comes on and I can look at my mom and we both know we’re about to scream the whole song. It reminds me of all the memories with my mom driving in the car, playing at home, and every dance party in the living room. This song always brings a smile to my face and I’ll never forget it. For those of you who haven’t heard it, this is the YouTube link! https://youtu.be/beINamVRGy4?si=KgDCGnl7kDjX6xjH
