Making School Better (Zack)

Seeing as we're coming up to the final days of school, we've obviously seen the way this school functions, and to put it bluntly, it's not always great. School should be a place that people want to come to, and not always for just their friends. So if you were in charge of changing an aspect of school to make it better for up and coming students, what would you do?

Personally, I think we should have more classes for students to take. I understand that this isn't something that can easily be done, especially since we live in such a remote town, but it would be a nice change of pace. More classes would make students want to come to school just for that class, and it could possibly make your schedule less boring if there were different options from year to year. When I was a freshman, the only classes that motivated me to go to school were theater and ceramics, which, believe it or not, were not classes I could continue when I moved.

The things I would want for upcoming classes are things that we use to have at the school or were fighting for. First thing, I would want the lockers to come back. I see the benefits of not having the lockers, students don't have to leave the classroom because they left their stuff and safety reason. But I remember in middle school, looking at the locker room and being so excited to decorate and make it my own. It's just the high school experience that I will or other will never experience. Second thing, longer lunch time. This is something that the students have fought for some time and are still not being heard. Students need time to disconnect with school and talk with friend and refuel and not be rushed with only half an hour. Finally, I would want advisory back. I think that we can all agree the system they have is not working because the class meetings and other extra circulars are taking up the time. Students aren't getting the extra time promise to work on things. I know that surely needed it especially in middle school and the beginning of high school. Just simply things to make the high school experience better.

One thing that I struggled with was the length of the day that we were having to be in class time compared to time off. In a real job one is legally required to have a 15 minute break every four hours of work and a one hour lunch break, while our school offers one 30 minute lunch hour. in an eight hour day. 30 minutes is hardly enough time to eat, leaving no time to decompress and reset. I would hope that one day students get to have a larger break. Along with this I would also like there to be more class options. We have a limited amount of advanced classes, that are hardly advocated for, so no one takes them. I feel that every high school student should have to take a minimum of one advanced, dual credit, AP, or honors class before graduating, because it teaches time management and advocates for active learning.
