Is it Too Early to Start Celebrating Christmas?

11/12/2023

Just as soon as the fall was upon us, it left just as quickly. Throughout the fall season people look forward to the night of Halloween to dress up and get treats. There's also a lot of other things about fall that make it so loveable. For example, pumpkin spiced things, scary movies, flannels and the falling of leaves. But as soon as the clocks turned to midnight on October 31 and it became November 1, there was a change in mood. Stores have completely changed the look of everything to fit the Christmas season. People are starting to play Christmas music and food chains are bringing out the peppermint flavoring. My question is, is it too early? As there is still technically a couple weeks of fall and Thanksgiving is approaching.

I personally have already started to play Christmas music in my car or when I'm doing things around the house. I love Christmas music but I won't start decorating until after Thanksgiving. For me it's not officially the winter or holiday season until there is snow on the ground and the lights are up. Especially with us living in Salmon where winter can last for half the year, I'm not quite ready for that. Where Christmas and the holidays bring a lot of joy and happiness for a few months, it can also bring stress. So I say that we can move into it slowly and not rush because that's what makes it longer and more enjoyable.

Shaylee, I love that you chose this topic because it is very controversial. In my opinion, I love Christmas very much and I always go into the Christmas season mood the day after halloween. I put a miniature tree in my room every year, and I put it up November 1st. I do this because I am a huge gift giver, but since I don’t work full time I always start gift shopping early, like end of October-early November. Then I just wrap the gifts I get and place them under the tree in my room to add to the Christmas essence. My family never fully decorates until the week after Thanksgiving. To me, I love the meaning of Christmas and the home-like feeling it brings so I have no hesitation to start preparing early.

I like the point that you make about shopping for Christmas presents earlier. Thats how stores also push the Christmas season. But being prepared is fantastic so one will have no worry for the rest of the Christmas season.

I wish I would get to buying presents early, because I always have to end up panic buying gifts 1-2 weeks before Christmas, which is stressful when buying online.

Krissy, i love that you start buying gifts in advance. it not only shows that you're senseful with your money but also shows that you value your time and use it when you can.

A couple years ago I got my own Christmas tree to put in my room, and it made me so excited every time I would walk into my room and see the lights shining off of the tree. It makes everything feel so special. I love how you put the presents under the tree to make it more spirit filled.

This is such an interesting topic to me. Personally I think decorating for Christmas should start after Thanksgiving, but that's only because I don't like Christmas. However I start listening to Christmas music as soon as November hits because it makes me happy. So just don't decorate physically until Thanksgiving.

I agree with you on the statement of not decorating until after Thanksgiving. It's actually a tradition in my family to head up in the mountains the day after Thanksgiving to cut our Christmas tree. Then a few days later we will put up the tree and decorate it. Sometimes I would like to decorate sooner, but I do like my family tradition.

I also don't start decorating till after Thanksgiving for the same reasons, however I never personally listen to Christmas music on my own accord because I am always surrounded by the music anyways.

This is such a Zack comment and I love it! For me, Christmas is my favorite holiday so it makes it easier for me to get excited earlier. Also, the music that comes along with Christmas itself is so easy get stuck in one’s mind all day because they are catchy and cheery.

I agree with you, I prefer to decorate for Christmas after Thanksgiving, however, I cannot listen to Christmas music before Thanksgiving because it starts to drive me insane. I get songs stuck into my head very easily, and if I listen to a catchy Christmas song, it will not leave my mind for days.

Even though Thanksgiving has not come yet, I do not get offended when someone decorates this early. I actually love it because Christmas is my favorite holiday and I cherish the spirit that comes with it. However, I personally never start decorating for Christmas until Thanksgiving has passed. This is because I typically like to take down Christmas decorations late, therefore decorating too early would feel overboard.

Halle, your comment gives me the same vibe as the whole "too much of a good thing' saying. you purposely waiting so you can experience the spirit of Christmas just a little more.

I really like this question Shaylee! For me personally, I love the way Christmas is celebrated for so long because it gives people joy and happiness during the time of the year where it’s always so dull and dark. One of my favorite memories each year is coming home late at night and seeing the Christmas lights through my windows as i’m pulling into my driveway, and walking into a warm house filled will Christmas decorations. This is such a warm and welcoming feeling in my opinion. My family decorates our house each year, but since my older brother graduated and now my sister, we seem to put everything up much sooner. We now have to get our Christmas tree during Thanksgiving break because that’s when my whole family is in town, and it wouldn’t be as special if we did it without them. It has been something I have enjoyed.

I have never thought about decorating early because of family visits, I think that is a great idea for families with kids that are in college because you can still celebrate the holiday decorations with them, even if it is before Christmas.

As much as I love Christmas, I prefer to decorate after Thanksgiving, otherwise it can be overwhelming. Thanksgiving deserves to be celebrated without being covered up by Christmas decorations and songs. I believe this especially when it comes to music, after listening to holiday music for two months in a row, I get tired of it. However, if everyone waits for Thanksgiving to be over, it is not so overbearing. After the fall season is over, and the Christmas tree is up, the snow has fallen, and the lights are strung up, I can finally enjoy the winter seasons and festivities.
