CO2 Much (Halle)

2/24/2024

As many of us know humans are releasing more and more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere daily, so much so that the environment can not keep up. However, it is not the consumers that are creating this problem. Large scale companies are the biggest contributors due to their manufacturing process being made cheaper and cheaper. By finding cost efficient ways to produce goods, it may be that companies are emitting more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than necessary. As large companies are combusting large quantities of CO2, should they be taxed for their damages?

While it is hard to place a number on the value of the atmosphere and carbon cycle, it is valuable and necessary to live. If there were a tax on companies that release so many toxins into the air, the government could place that money into projects that are fighting these issues. However, the down side to this is that there would be more money given to a system that many people do not trust. It may not be guaranteed that the government would use that money for the environment, but rather other projects. Should we be worried about global warming? If so, should we tax large companies for emitting CO2?

While this might be an unpopular option, I don't believe that taxing them is the right answer. Sure what they're doing isn't morally right but taxing isn't the answer. If we taxed these companies for their emissions they would find a way to minimize the money they would end up paying, like many companies already do. We'd need to find a different way.

I agree, that for as much as companies are releasing CO2 and we need to clean up the environment, there has to be a different way to approach this than taxing.

I do not believe that taxing companies for emitting CO2 should happen. Large companies already have an insane amount of taxes they have to pay, as well as many other charges, so adding more onto it may harm some businesses. For example, people have been trying to get the Jervois mine here in town up and running for many years, but because of how much they are having to pay to meet the regulations for CO2 emissions, it has not been able to. If Jervois was getting taxed for this as well, they would have no chance at all. Also, the reason large companies are producing a lot of CO2 is because of what is wanted or needed by humans. If people were to reduce the amount of CO2 being emitted, they wouldn’t be able to produce the products that people want. It isn’t fair to punish companies for providing a product that people thrive with.

See this is one of the reasons to why I can see why taxing isn't the solution because if Jervois came it would be beneficial to Salmon. If there was the heavy tax on them then there would be even a lesser chance, but I mean they aren't here now, so I don't know.

While I agree that taxing is not the solution to this problem, I do think that large companies choose to manufacture things using cheap and fast processes to cut down cost. As a result more carbon and toxins are being released. Along with this I do not see Jervois as a part of this topic because they are extracting valuable materials necessary for our societies function, I more so was speaking about super large companies such as Nike, Pepsi, or Amazon. But I agree that we need to find other solutions.

You did not specify what companies, so I was just using Jervois as an example for this topic. However, the companies you listed are going to have to put off a lot of toxins to meet the needs of people.

This is such a great take, that we as consumers are the main reason for the amount of Co2 that companies are producing are our fault. And it's the correct thinking, we as consumers constantly need new stuff, meaning we run our factories into over time.

I can see both sides of this argument. While I think that taxing companies for releasing so much CO2 would have them pull back on making things so fast and uncleanly and that it would help the environment, I feel like it would come back to fight someone or something. There need to be a solution the CO2 problem and find cleaner ways to make our products, but taxing might not be the right direction to go in.

I agree, the solution to this problem is not taxing the companies. However as of right now there is nothing being done at a large scale to get these companies to find solutions. I hope that we as a society can work on finding ways to reduce our carbon footprint.

No matter what regulations are put in place, there are always going to be people that are unhappy. So, this is another reason as to why I disagree with taxing companies as you do too.

I like the idea of finding cleaner ways to make our items, but how much money would that cost us in the end? Maybe thats not as cost effective as just taxing companies upright
