Within the current school year, we have not had advisory. Although some enjoy this, personally, I do not. Many of the teachers have seen a decline in grades throughout the middle schoolers, and high schoolers. I believe taking away advisory has played a major role in these statistics. Some students do not need the extra time/help, but for those that are slower learners, or miss school for sickness etc., it has been quite difficult. They have no designated time to pursue good grades on their homework. Not only has it been difficult in this aspect, it has also been a struggle for the organizations such as Student Council, NHS, DFY, and class fundraisers, to find a time to discuss what is needing to be done. Currently, Student Council is having to meet in the mornings at 7:15, to be able to plan everything, and this is not something that teenagers who are still developing should have to do. As one of the leaders within this group, I have seen a decline in attendance because students are not willing to wake up early. Do you enjoy not having advisory, or do you think it is a necessity for the students within our school?

I also believe that as students we should have more in class time to work on homework and assignments. Not only because it helps kids who struggle with school have more opportunities to learn and advance, but also because many students have extracurriculars or home/life responsibilities they they must attend to when school gets out. I know many of my peers that do not have excess time to work on school at home, so they do not get it done, which reflects badly on their transcript. That extra 30 minutes to work on school during advisory aided kids struggling with such problems. Removing this free time also eliminated a moment for kids to destress. No job can or will ask their workers to only have a 35 minute lunch with no breaks, it is both morally and legally unethical to make people work without breaks, so why should schools be able to?

You make a fantastic point about the lunch breaks for working jobs. I remember when I worked at Saveway I was given a hour break to eat. We know how the employee situation is at Saveway, there aren't many there, but they have great benefits. Adults talk about how they want to do everything they can to make teenagers mental health better. That they hear we are stressed and overstimulated. But then they take way our extra work time. Pretty hypocritical.

I agree. I have seen many kids give up on certain assignments, due to them knowing there’s no chance of them getting it done within the class time provided. It’s sad honestly.

Halle, you are so right about many of us not having time at home because of outside circumstances. I also like your take on us only having a 35 minute break throughout the eight hour day that we're forced to endure (then add on the stuff outside of school.) We need advisory back.

I will admit that I have gotten used to the new schedule, but I do miss advisory and all the benefits that come with it. I am very lucky my final year to not have many difficult classes. Even though I have two study hall periods to do what little homework I have. However, I remember how much I need advisory the previous high school years and middle school. I know that there are many students, especially younger, who are becoming so stressed out because they have no time to do homework with also doing extra circular activities and personal life. Also being able to use that time for class meetings or any other organization, makes it so easy on not only the students but the teacher as well. I feel like we are used to the new schedule but are missing out on benefits that we used to have.

I too have gotten used to the new schedule, but there are definitely side effects. I feel like there has been so much more confusion with the schedule and when we switch times and when we don’t. It’s kind of difficult. One thing I miss about advisory is socializing with the students in our grade and talking with our teachers. Since we don’t have many classes with the people we will graduate with, I really don’t see them very often and it’s kinda sad.

I feel the same, though I have adapted to the new schedule, it does not compare the opportunities that flex offered. Not only this, but now there is no spare time during school hours to have class meetings, assemblies, or any extracurricular meetings. This time was a multipurpose resource that students and staff should still have access to.

I think the class organizations is another perfect reason on why we should have advisory. Now if we want a class meeting we have to have an assembly schedule, which ruins my entire day. Bring back those 30 minutes where nothing was ruined when we needed to talk as a class.

I also miss advisory, throughout the previous years I used to use advisory as my homework time. It was the only time I had to work on class work before said class started. Taking it away hasn't effected me as much as I thought it would but it's certainly making me have to do much more work in the sanctity of my home.

I have also come to the point where I don't like to do homework at home. I find that I'm more efficient and focused on school. while I now have two study hall periods to do things now, I remember when all I had was advisory and would use that time for extra things. Some students don't have study halls and are really falling behind.
